To people who don't seem to believe Bruce Lee is the real deal..

This is stuff that has come from traditional martial arts. You probably won't learn techniques like these in MMA, granted MMA is much better for perfecting timing and execution under pressure...if your base style doesn't adjust to real-time or work against resistance, what good is it?

Strikes to vital points (that you can't do in MMA type sparring) do work.

A public example of this is when BJ Penn 'accidentally' landed a finger to Matt Hughes eye in UFC 63. It sent Matt turning away from Hughes and bent him over and Matt Hughes isn't a fighter known for turning his back! Back in UFC 6 (I think)..Keith Hackney escaped Joe Son's guard, got a side mount and punched him in the balls until Son let him go.

Tieing this all back to your original post about Bruce, he advocated sparring against resisting opponents with rules to develop attributes for fighting, as he did with his students and with other martial artists like Dan Inosanto, TKD master Jhoon Lee, HKD master Ji Han Jae, Judo Gene Labelle and as an amateur boxer once he got to the States.

He also advocated fighting dirty when necessary, which he drilled against the wooden dummy, bags or done carefully against opponents - spear fingers, elbows, stomping, attacking the ears/groin and even biting.

He believed in fighting to test attributes, while training with weapons that could do more harm.

I think one of your previous posts mentions your study of taiji. Don't know much about the system, except that it looks like aikido and is known for generating power from strong rooting rather than muscular exertion.

I did taiji years ago, and another chinese art called Khong Chang (empty palm), I know it sounds similar to karate, but it's actually very different in practice..

Taiji does focus on strong rooting, but the actual combat taiji does have certain techniques with more agile footwork (not somersaults or leaping), just shifting of feet. Actually, in many fighting arts, shifting of footwork can sometimes equate to using opponent's force against himself - so the theory of using opponent's force doesn't just apply to taiji or aikido (as commonly thought to be). These are just little things not noticed by many, I guess. I guess taiji is similar to aikido in some aspects, but besides the hands and feet, taiji utilizes knees, elbows, shoulders and every section of the hand.

And rooting does generate power, but a big part of the power comes from the circular movements. As everyone knows, a punch, when fully swung generates more power because it takes a circular path, but since wide swings are risky in an actual fight, we apply the theory of "small circle" in our faster straight punches.

Yeah.. Bruce believed in doing whatever was necessary to bring the opponent down.

Anyway, did Bruce Lee learn HKD before, prior to developing JKD? cos there are similarities to stances and punches used in HKD, just wondering if anybody knows..

And was it true that Bruce didn't like training to kick for actual fighting (except the JKD stop-kick), but trained more to defend against them?

hes a good example of someone who was good in his time but his character elevates him to a level where people think he is the best. Compared to todays bodybuilders he wouldnt make it onto the stage for mr.olympia.

There are guys at regional an national levels that are bigger now than he was back then. times change.

oh yeah hes still good, but yeah its moved on alot since then.
People likejay cutler and ronnie coleman are just HUGE, personally i think arnie looks better but he was not near their size, arnie had chest and arms but not the back and legs of these guys though i think they look totally freaky now.

Absolutely. Using what works is important!

If punches work, use them. If spear fingers work, use them. Hell, if buying your date a drink works, do it...lol.

Each situation dictates which weapon you're going to use though. A shovel hook to the liver will down someone without killing them, whereas the spear fingers could do more damage.

And if you buy your date a good long island iced tea, mixed well, even a feral-looking guy like myself just might get a hug at the end of the evening lol.
