  • JKD in NE Ohio

I've been trying to locate a JKD instructor in the Akron, OH area. After searching this site and doing a lot of googling I have come up with the following:

    1. http://www.clevelandjkd.com/instructor.htm

    2. http://www.jkdassoc.com/Member/InstructorsListings.html whick lists Kenneth Gleeson, Mike Wooten and Jason and David Palumbo. I emailed these three last night.

Does anyone here have any opinions, info or knowledge on any of them? Thanks in advance.

Chris Hoy is under Cass Magda, who is one of the Full Instructors under Guro Inosanto to come out of the superb stable from the Kali Academy in the early 80’s, along with the likes of Chris Kent, Paul Vunak etc. Mr Magda’s organisation does teach a solid base in Bruce Lee’s original art of Jun Fan Gung Fu (JKD), also be aware that they specialise in the Indonesian and Filipino Martial Arts, in particular a heavy emphasis is placed on Pentjak Silat.

The other Gentlemen are part of the late, great Sifu Larry Hartsell’s organisation. Mr Tim McFatridge, who is a member of this forum, is an Instructor in this organisation. Perhaps Tim can offer you some thoughts on what to expect from the training?

      SFOLK,

Good luck. I live in the mid west also, and I have to travel to California (Oakland area) to see my instructor. There are a lot of people around that are good though, it just depends on which branch of the tree you want to train in.

JKD noes not equal JKD. Two JKDs can be so difrent that they are unrecognizabale, and controdictory with one another. (You may already be well awair of this).

The Inosanto school stuff is not for me, which is why I have to travel. IF you like the LA school, there are plenty of good instructors in that method as I think Mike sugests.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to train with Chris Hoy Thursday night. I haven't heard back from any of the others. Happy Cat what schools/people are in the Oakland group?

I train with Felix Macias Jr. His father, Felix Sr. was one of James Lee and Al Novack's first students. He continued to train with Bruce, James and Al until James death in 1972

Since then, the Macias family has continued to train in the origonal art (which they call THE WAY OF THE INTERCEPTING FIST, which is simply the english translation of JKD). Their art has evolved and advanced since the death of our two great Sifus.

Felix Jr. traned with James as a young boy, and continued to train with his father after the death of the Lees.

This guy has the moves. If you are in the area come and see. He is still in Oakland CA(Hayward) which is out of the way for most of us.

On a personal note, My grand father was a pro boxer, and I had been fooling myself for a long time that I was a good boxer too. It took Felix all of 15 seconds to show me 30 years of my error. So bring humble if you come to Oakland.

The web site is under construction at: www.taoofgungfu.com

          Good luck

I've checked out the Macias website and there are several inaccuracies and one or two illogical statements.

First, the 'Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Federation' is not a concepts group, it's an origInal group.

Second, the split that occurred in jkd wasn't between the Seattle group and the LA group. The Seattle group is led by sifu Taky Kimura, who is close to both Linda Lee and sifu Dan Inosanto. The split was between Concord Moon Enterprises (led by Linda and Shannon Lee) along with Ted Wong against (what appears to be) EVERYONE else.

Third, why is it that your Oakland group is allowed to evolve, but the concepts group is not? Per your group's website, you guys are 'constantly evolving'.

You might want to look a little beneath the surface, I can not lay it out for you.

The relationship between LA and Seattle is more complex than you may know, and as most who post here know well. The relationship between these schools and Oakland is even more complex. But that is just politicks, and most of us have long since tired of the political wars.

All I can tell you is Felix has the moves, whatever your political orientation.

As for evolution, evolve or do not evolve, that is your choice.

                      JuJu,

Now I see whare you are comming from. You have posted to some other threads attacking "origonal" JKD. Just let the politicks go kid. I know you are in class with Sifu Dan, of whome I have great repect. But that does not mean that you have to disrespect the other branchess of the tree. All you are doing is closing yourself off.

First, please, please, PLEASE learn how to spell 'origInal'. It's not 'origOnal' with an 'O', ok? Second, I'm not a kid or your kid. I've been involved in martial arts for a long time (1981) and I'm pretty certain that I've been involved in jkd a lot longer than you. I have instructor credentials in five systems (jun fan, kali, silat, muay thai and combat submission wrestling) and I'm working on two more (bjj and savate). I have no interest in politics whatsoever, either. I am simply defending the honor of two men that I respect immensely, namely sifus Dan Inosanto and Paul Vunak. If I recall, in an earlier thread, you said jkd is not a mixture of 26 arts as some in the concepts group imply. Whether you realize it or not, people like me will take that as an underhanded implication that these two great instructors don't know or are lying to their students and public. I take offense to that. If you want to call that 'politics' then so be it, I guess I'll engage in some 'politics'.

                          Well,
I think I said that Bruce did not combine 22 arts to create JKD. What has been done to JKD since then is another question. Sorry to hurt your feelings.

Happy, I'm curious; why do you post on this forum? Nothing against you; just curious.
