  • High Kicks

I've put this here because the Korean art of TKD is probably the style that concentrates most on high kicks.

Who here really thinks that high kicks were originally designed to kick people off their horses? I mean, come on, how bloody stupid.

I reckon someone writing a book about MAs just made that up, and because no one else knew why all these high kicks had been developed, everyone bleated the same old crap.

I'm an ITF instructor, all my colleagues and freinds are ITF instructors, none of them tell people high kicks were created to dismount riders.

What makes you say ITF says this? Did you have an ITF instructor that said it?

IDK what you guys are talking about, but I go to the nearest Equestrian club and use my high kicks to kick riders off their horses, then I use my ninja magic to dissappear into the shadows.

Damian, I only put this in the Korean section because TKD is more famous for its high kicks than anything else. Over the years I've seen this silly idea many times, but not always in relation to TKD. Karate and Kung Fu practitioners have also espoused this bollocks.

But don't ask me to find a refence. I've read too many books and can't be arsed searching.

Good job Tai-gip has an instructor along these lines. I knew he wouldn't let me down, as he is at the cutting edge were stupid claims in the martial arts are concerned.

Sounds familiar with karate.Every one believes the old crap about how katas were meant as a way to practice hidden techniques capable of defending oneself. The old belief of katas being useful is just that old and garbage.

I was told this when I learned Nedan-Geri, and to be perfectly honest the instructor telling me was a diluted one (an englishman taught by a european taught by an American who in turn probably was taught with exercise videos).

I used to attend a Kickboxing club that was into points fighting and high flashy kicks. I left after a while as I realised that it was no use what so ever on the street or in fact outside of a dojo (they didn't even use the high kicks in tournaments because it 'took too long' - so why teach it then?).

Also I kept straining my legs trying to do stupid things like waggling my feet in the air like a pair of socks on a washing line.

In my cirrent club we still do high kicks, but they are mostly as a demonstration of flexibility more than anything... the main reasoning is to promote balance, stretching, control and exercising those hips!

I have read some things about high kicks for dismounting riders, conversly I have read more about it being rubbish.

That's actually interesting, as I'm about to start getting dan ranking in WTF as well. How did you go about it? And what awful ITF instructor fed you that BS about dismounting horses?
