Needless to say, I flew through the colored ranks in WTF.
Dude, they prefer to be called African-Americans or black. Was it an inner-city school?

          TKD and Horses

I've been told that the high kicks were developed to dismount chinese invaders on horseback. My instructor (WTF 7th Dan Korean guy) told me this and his assistant (WTF 5th Dan Korean guy) has backed him up. I've got no reason to doubt them. Remember that just because it seems unreasonable to us now doesn't mean it didn't make sense thousands of years ago. Apparently the Koreans weren't too into horse riding so the mounted Chinese had a major height and speed advantage. The high spinning kicks were developed to counter this.

how the heck did I let this thread get by me.

Hee Il Cho is a great martial artist. There is a video of him doing a jump spin side kick into a heavy weight back and actually kicking through it. The speed is incredible. I wish I had a copy of it for my library.

I've heard the story of kick mounted people from horses. As a sneak attack it might work. I don't much care if they did or didn't do it. I have not had to kick anyone off a horse so it's not important to me.

People in the mountains often had poor nutrition and that made them smaller than the people down in the fields. Thus they used kicks to generate greater power than the hand techniques favored by the larger lowlanders. This is the story i've seen many times in different books and such. It is backed up by some science as asians who move to the united states from such areas do start getting bigger. and not just fatter.

Tae Kwon Do is best used when kicking people off of their high horses.

They do. High kicks should be used sparringly while sparring; only when you can get an opening and only at the end or middle of a combo.

Tameo, saying they expose the groin therefore are not usable is low kick arts (such as kungfu) propaganda. They are used successfully to end full contact fights every day.

Like Tom Yum said they should be used sparingly or set up in a combo.

Hand to Hand, who is teaching you that it's easy to grab head level kicks? It's much easier to grab low line kicks, I do it every day.... but head level, that's a rare catch indeed. And they don't need to be used as rarely as you think, people are getting knocked out with them in full contact matches all the frickin time, you might not throw them as often as a low line kick but they are thrown more often than you imagine, and successfully too.

Hey I stole this from another board:

"BlackBelt Mag. December issue...... Melbourne Australia.........

Martial artist will face murder charges for allegedly striking another man with a spin kick to the head.

Three men (18+) confronted the MA looking for a fight. Trying to back away he landed the kick as one of the men tried to strike him. He is in custody pending a hearing.

Can you imagine the fallout, not only there but here in the U.S., if they should somehow find him guilty of murder. I don't know Australian Law, but a murder charge sounds really reaching."
