The idea of kickinng horseriders off their horses doesn't sound so unrealistic to me. Remember your whole body weight will be behind the force of a (skillful) jumping kick. And that if you're running from an opposite direction, the force will be almost doubled, because of relativity.
Think of it more as a tackle.

If you just mean standing high kicks..then no..it would be hard enough reaching that high, nevermind applying enough force. And against a spear/sword.

edit: doh sorry for bumping, was linked to this thread

Nah, I think it's feasible that perhaps people used scissor kicks or something to sometimes dismount people. Of course, if they were armed, and you weren't, to try and dismount them would be better than just sitting there, or trying to run from a horse which can run at 40mph.

standing high kick though, no way. be better to try and low kick the horse and break it's leg or some shit (if you couldn't run)

Funnily enough the rest of the forum seem to speak English.

I don't claim to know much at all about the history of the Far East before the 70s but I've ridden horses, studied physics and no it's not totally unfeasible that a GOOD jumping kick could knock someone off a horse. I never said it was something done all the time, or done full stop, just said it was possible. Obviously if they duck, or point a spear at you...it ain't gonna work. But if someone happened not have a spear, or wasn't expecting a kick, it would be an option. Especially when compared to being trampled, or trying to outrun a horse.

jubaji..I don't know how old you are (guessing at 14) but just because your feeble mind can't comprehend something outside your own little world, doesn't mean it can't happen

I'm relatively new to karate but I was under the impression that the main advantage of katas were to practise your stances. Is this incorrect?

correct!!!! but be sure that you know the purpose and its application of every movement that you execute during your kata..... but... kungfu kata is far more superior compare to a karate kata.....

whether it is Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate, GoJo Ryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, Kenpo Karate, TRACMA Karate, ecetera of karates ARE ALL THE SAME.......

unlike in kungfu...... a unique in every kungfu styles or systems..... far more advance...... for that is the true meaning of MARTIAL ARTS......

All karate may have same stances but they have different forms just as kung fu does.

All kung fu styles have different stance but they are all similar so how is this any different from all karate having same or similar stances? I did Okinawan Goju Ryu and I don't see how kung fu can be superior to karate as I have seen many different Kung Fu styles perform their katas at tournaments and look no better then karate practitioners.

As far as I am concerned both do katas and both are good for their own purpose but both are also lousy for self-defense.

Actually come to think of it you are wrong about all karate having same stance because If I am correct kempo karate unlike all other styles of karate doesn't have fancy stances they only have fighting stance and if I am correct once again they don't do katas either.

If Kempo karate is like I think it is they are the only realistic form of karate.

                    • Yes I agree.Kata, forms and poomse are to train your individual techniques and stances. They are not intended as a "how to of self defence".

                        You are extremely wrong!!!!!

the reason why i want to learn more on wingchun and ngochokun because the stance of chidianbun is very weak, cause i believe that the t-shaped stance of ngochokun and the forward stance of wingchun is the best cause they did not expose their inside legs and groin.... and your only chance of hitting is only hit to their body and head but it is a very impossible to do and hit it cause the hand do the work, while the hand is on-guard - then you can't land any attack of yours......

                        i always do:
                        absorb what is usefull
                        reject what is useless
add especially what is your own

i did combine my all previously learned in Kungfu to make it a one ultimate martial art.....

and easy to take down because the wing chun stance is upright, like muay thai. Wing chun fighters get taken down easily against wrestlers and jujitsu fighters. Feel free to watch any of the UFCs.

Emin Boztepe's anti-grappling is wing tsun's only answer to grappling but its effectiveness against skilled grapplers hasn't been tested. It might be good against people with basic grappling skills or none at all, but it hasn't been tested.

i frequently watch UFC and K1 but i feel very dizzy and sleep cause all fighter that you see there, all of their strikes has no power, why? they could not defeat their opponent in a matter of minutes and after the fight - both of them are still standing...... its a bullshit, its only an entertainment to my eyes like WWF..... since K1 and UFC is all FAKED fights.......

Sherwinc I respect the fact you're a martial artist and truely believe in your art even if I disagree on your opinions but everyone is allowed to their own opinion, however your opinions and explainations are never very convincing to me.No offense but I don't think you're good at convincing anyone in here at least no me anyways.

I get the feeling you say this, because deep down inside of you,you know that your style would never work in stuff like UFC and K1 and don't want to admit to it.

I can't believe you are saying this shit, because most fights in UFC end on the ground not standing up.

The reason is because like any tournament it has rules (they just have less rules then others)no shit it is entertainment you expect guys to beat each other up to death in a tournament? Get real.Tournaments are based on testing skills of each style.Any fight with rules is fake, you're stating the obvious.

UFC and K1 are nothing like WWF though because they are more realistic and are the closest you can get to a real fight and besides more interesting to watch.WWF is just junk food for the brain.
