  • TKD – Good beginner's martial art

I started TKD when I was 9. It was the first time I was introduced to that sort of atmosphere and what helped was the abundance of other children my age. As a child, not only do you need discipline, but social interaction and motivation... Children just don't have the attention span needed to learn serious SD or combat arts.

For this reason, I believe TKD is a good beginning martial art. My BJJ started with about 5 kids and now they're all gone... Mainly because BJJ takes a lot of committment with the rewards being very slow in coming. There was a 12 year old white belt in our beginner's class who got tired of getting tapped out by stronger adults and quit. That's the problem I see with some BJJ gyms. There's a white belt class and a Blue belt and up class. Some white belts have been there for 4 years!

Karate is the most popular martial arts here in the Philippines......

      why?????

cause people here in the Philippines
when they see Karate they called it Karate,
when they see Tae Kwon Do they called it Karate,
when they see KungFu they called it Karate,
when they see Boxing they called it Boxing,
when they see KickBoxing they called it KickBoxing
when they see MuayThai they called it KickBoxing
when they see AiKiDo they called it Karate
when they see Wrestling they called it Wrestling
when they see Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) they called it Karate

      Note:
majority of the terms is Karate

it simple means that Karate - its meaning to the common people here is Martial Arts

      Note:
Most of the debates here is comparing Karate versus Boxing/Kickboxing, and KungFu is only applicable in movies.......

It's the same way in China, arts from other countries are still called gung fu. The only exception is TKD (because it's an olympic sport) and Xanda (kickboxing).

Wow, all my Thai friends think muy thai is the best... However, I do believe Karate IS and will be the most popular martial art, although there are many styles under its realm. As far as taekwondo being a beginner's martial art... up until 3rd dan, it is. In reality, taekwondo as the orig art doesn't start training until 1st dan, anything below is just conditioning and mind-setting.

Who told you that. I started training the first day I stepped in to the dojang. Now I will agree the journey really begins at 1stdan but the training starts way before that.

Really, that's good... it's just that my experience taught me that when I reached 1st dan, I realized how much I didn't know. It was my teacher who clarified to me that real training doesn't start until 1st dan. He used to teach unarmed combat to the Ecuadorian Military Academy and one of the forerunners of taekwondo with Gen. Choi, Jhoon Rhee, and GM Cho Hee-il; they were all buddies.

When you get first dan they should give you some sort of license to run a McDojo.

                        Yaberdaber,

                        Dear Yaberdaber,

Would you care to inform us as to the name of the teacher you refer to in regards to being in close quarters with Gen. Choi, Jhoon Rhee, and Cho Hee Il.

I am the adult son of an Oh Do Kwan instructor. My father is familiar with many of the original ITF instructors (being he is ITF plaque #66). Having lived my life around these influences I am always interested to here where these Master Instructors have gone and how they are doing.

Proudly Preserving and Promoting Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-Do,
                        Spookey

                        TAEKWON!

P.S. If you are not free to list his name here, please send me a personal message.

                          Hey,
Sorry I haven't replied fast. He's An Dae Sup, former vice president of Ji Do Kwan. He served in the Korean military for four years in mid 60's, then became the Prime Minister's head bodyguard. He was then requested by the Ecuadorian Military Academy to teach unarmed combat. He transferred to Chicago in the mid 70's and competed with gm Cho Hee Il for students. By the early 80's, he moved down to south Texas and established successful chain of schools up until now.
Mr. An is part of the WTF, however, he was very well aquainted with these other masters, including gm Rhee in Washington and the late Gen. Cho. The General used to visit him at home.
If you have any other questions about Mr. An, I am here to ask.

                          ~Ya

It's not watered down shit you idiot, it's just sport. The reason you idiots keep knocking TKD is because your kicks suck. I bet you couldn't even kick someone above the stomach, or do ONE kicking combination that wasn't parried or blocked.

I wish I did TKD since I was 7 or whatever, because then I'd be one fast mofo. These experienced TKDers kick as fast as they can run.
