Look how good Tyson moves. Look how he knocks out the guys with their hands down or up. This issue: They don't move as good as Tyson. They are shocked by his movement. They fail to move. They try and keep their hands up to defend, but, boom.............. they get knocked out.

Are there any websites with San Da video I can watch?

Yes, boxed for years, trained in Karate, Esrima, fought Muay Thai, etc.
Most of all I ran the street of the inner city as a kid and teen, that is where the real fights took place.

These experiences are why I place a great value on Olympic TKD competition training. Remember, it's not the only way I train my students, however, it is the most valuable. Everything else is second.

      2 questions:

      1. Have you ever competited outside of TKD - trained and boxed doesn't = fighting or competition - you said it yourself its not the same.

      2. Would you like to meet and show me what your are talking about? Without more information such as voice inflection and non-verbal ques I can't tell if you know what you're talking about or just simply full of it (I don't mean to offend on the part.)

Yes I have competed in Boxing, Karate and Judo.

I have no interest in meeting you in person. However, I do have an interest in your experience in competing in USAT or WTF sanctioned black belt sparring events. When you get some, get back to me, until then you have no clue what it is about. I know you can't tell if I know what I am talking about or not, it's because you have no experience in USAT/WTF Taekwondo. So maybe that begs the question, why are you even in this discussion?

          Having delusions of grandeur today?!

Too keep your hands down in an encounter of the martial kind is pure ignorance and stupidity!

There is such a thing as simple body mechanics. First, concussions are a bad thing. And that is the first time. Football has since proven that concussions can have accumulative effects.

Second, the connection between the head and the body is not that strong. Unless your are a bull necked weightlifter, there is a great potential for damage getting your head kicked in!

And, to clse the gap to RL situations of Self Defense, if you are laying on the ground unconcious, you can't fight, if you get a good solit hit to the nose, you will not fight back for a moment!

So take your WTF experiance and shove it where the sun doesn't shine!

            Thats asham. . .
Why am I even having this discussion? Actually I should be asking you the same - I was the one started this thread asking why TKD "players" keep there hands down, the general consense is that it's not too safe - is what I gather from the poll here.

Don't get me wrong - I understand where you are coming from - its a sport specific ideology. Although I find it really funny that you think that this ideology expands beyond the scope of TKD. Movement is key but keeping your hands down just to be more mobile is really scary scarifice. I mean just because taking doors off a car makes your car faster and more mobile doesn't mean that one should do it. Especially if other cars are gunning for you.

My point is you really can not find out from what is written in these post. You are getting advise from people here who never competed in WTF sanctioned events. If I wanted to have an idea of what it was to walk on the moon, I would at least want to hear it from the man who walked on the moon, not someone who climbed a hill once and looked at the moon. Better yet, walk on the moon yourself, now you know 100% for sure. But until you do, it's all speculation.

Thanks, about the nicest thing you said today!

No, I am no kid, I have come to terms with my mortality and I am needed in this world, fully functional. A point driven home when a young woman got knocked out at rank advancement. If I would have hit the floor I would have been in trouble, I was the one driving, I am the one running the show at home...

And as another FYI, my mother had a special treat she threatened my sister with should she not put her helmet on riding her Moped: A tour through the ward of the Vegetable patients, the ones once vital young men an women (mostly men) cut down in their prime to become living corpses!

I bet you also drive without a seatbelt! Or ride a Motorcycle without helmet...condoning hands down sparring is not much different.

As much as you can't block every attack, you can't dodge them all either.

So, do you keep your keyboard on the floor so you can type with your hands down and just move your head around a little?

Your comments show that you have zero or little experience in the full contact venue. Again, if you teach students hands up first, move second, they will always be deficient in their defense. If you disagree, well, be ready to visit your students in that vegetable ward.

At least you put a little more thought into this post. Keep it up, you are improving!

You're looking for a way out of this thread now, aren't you? You thought you'd try to look like a big shot and pontificate on how you also need to work on head movement etc. but you went too far and said something stupid and now you're looking for a way out of the shit-storm without just being man enough to admit you exaggerrated your point for effect.
