If i was to train in STH Korea.Will they accept my ITF BLACK BELT?

Can some tell me if i was to train anywhere in STH korea, like local clubs or the universities?

Will they accept my ITF black belt. or will i have to start again? has any1 done this before??? plz tell

will the WTF or kukkiwon accept it. i would love to train in SOUTH KOREA or even NTH KOREA but its hard to go there offcourse. but seroiusly to train and experience taekwondo in korea as there culture i dont give a **** is its from any org.. it would be an honour to meet grandmaster Kang . he is like a general choi..

In South Korea today, it is very uncommon to find Taekwondo schools with any students over the age of 14. You can visit Dojangs for a week and never see an adult student. That said, if you find a school with adults, no one will question your black belt. Black Belt in Korea has a very different meaning than the rest of the world. Black Belts in Korea are quite common and everyone will assume if you say you are a Dan holder, then you are one.

Most Taekwondoin (Taekwondo People) in S. Korea have no idea what ITF, or Gen. Choi is. Most don't even know what a Kwan was.

The only problem you would have is if you wanted to attend the "Jidoja Yunsu-won" or Leadership Academy at Kukkiwon. You would need a Kukkiwon Dan for that. But, that is no problem as anyone with an ITF Dan can request "assimiable Dan transfer" and change their ITF, or like organization Dan over to a Kukkiwon Dan.

That being said, there are two main gyms in Seoul for adults and foreigners. Sang Rok Gym in Shin-wol 3 Dong, and the Foreigners Gymnasium at Itaewon. Currently at Sang Rok Gym, there is an ITF Dan holder in training and he is very comfortable and happy there.

Taekwondo training at a university is a radically different experience from training at a Dojang. At elementary, middle, high school and college, the only Taekwondo training is for sparring competition, and it is very intense.

They would accept you as a Dan holder, however you will find in time that you would need to transfer to a Kukkiwon Dan as you will need an official Kukkiwon Dan number for various paperwork etc.

Most universities in Korea have good Taekwondo competition programs. The top ones being Hankuk Chae Dae, Kyung Hee, and Yong In. I believe that both Yong In and Kyung Hee offer BA/Master/PhD Degrees in Taekwondo as well.

I am involved in teaching and practicing Kukkiwon Taekwondo or what you might think of as WTF. But referring it WTF is actually incorrect.

For the many years that I was a member of the USTU (WTF in the USA), I was affiliated with the WTF. I was a member because I was involved in WTF competitions, but no longer. Being that for several years I have not renewed my USTU (now USAT) membership, I think it's $35, I am not longer affiliated with the WTF. Like anyone, I can rejoin at anytime. However I am still very involved in Kukkiwon Taekwondo and will be for life.

Thanks for the welcome and the compliment. However, there is a lot about Taekwondo that I don't know, but I'm learning.

All you need is someone from your country who has a 4th Dan Kukkiwon or above to request a similar Dan transfer from Kukkiwon. If Kukkiwon accepts, they would issue you a Kukkiwon Dan, or Poom certificate depending on your age. If not, you can write Kukkiwon directly for assistance.

By the way, there is no such thing as a WTF Black Belt.

Here is what the Kukkiwon Dan Promotion Regulations say about similar Dan:

Article 18 : Permission of Similar Dan certificates and Jump-up Promotion
1. This applies to one who has a similar Taekwondo Dan certificates, it is required to submit the
following document;
(1) Application for promotion test
(2) Personal history/ Taekwondo career
(3) Explanatory recommendation by the president of the Member National Association. However, in
those countries which do not fall into 1st category, recommendation can be submitted by
president of Member National Association or independent instructors.
(4) Korean staying abroad is required to submit any document of residency in respective foreign
countries.
(5) Other supporting data.

Austrailia is a category 2 Nation, so individual instructors can apply for you.

If you are going to korea it also wouldnt be a bad idea to start looking at the very drastic change in sparring. Sparring in collage is a very huge deal so big of a deal i herd not sure if it true but there will be a sparring comp. for like placement almost like getting a scholership.

If you seriously want ITF in Korea there is at least one ITF school in South Korea and North Korea is all ITF now..... since they have the presidency of one of the 3 ITF's. Don't know why you want to train in South Korea though... hope you aren't thinking they have good TKD there. I'm sure they do, but they also have the WORST TKD in the world. It is too common and commercialised and almost everybody seems to have a black belt regardless of ability.

North Korea.... well not the nicest place to be and I personally wouldnt want to visit unless I was with some powerful friends.

South Korea is pretty hardcore boring too... so go train in another country! heh

Yes i do know that all Nth korea in ITF my Subum nim has told me many stories. With ur opinion about south korean tkd is abit harsh mate. sayin sth Koreans having the worst Tkd in the world. You sure u arent sayin that cous u have a ITF backround?? how would u know> have u been there? and have u meet seen what the standard is like there. Sorry but i do not agree with u sayin that. There is some incridable practioners in south Korea. practioners such as Taekwondo Master Shin Chul Kang the man that can do a 180 side kick seroiusly NOW this guy has PRESENCE (have u heard of him Alcohol, and would u know where his tkd school is??? it would be a honour to train with him. he is like another general choi) people live a breath taekwondo over there and offcourse its part of there culture and thats who i wanna be assocaited with. i do agree with you that i should go to north Korea, and do the ITF TKD there. Because thats what i do and there standard also is incridable. i have many of nth korea ITF videos. There technique is amazing. But seroiusly me goin to NTH KOREA! thats fucken crazy! they will kill as soon they know im a aussie. Havin said that in my opinion South koreans WTF are just as good the north koreans. No no no heh, I already said I'm sure they have excellent TKD, but they also have the WORST yes the WORST. Yes I've been there. And most of my friends in the WTF have visited there and trained. They would go to watch 4th degree black belt testings that looked like the equivalent of a green belt from Canada. South Korea INVENTED THE MCDOJO. They are the kings of selling rank, making money and pumping out useless black belts. Everyone in the WTF I've talked to about it all says the same damn thing heh. I prefer ITF style but I've trained WTF alot and see them both as TKD.

I didnt say you should visit NKorea... but no they won't kill you, they do get tourists. It's just a very sad lame place.... I wouldnt want to go there. South korea is just a little boring, pretty dry place. Honestly man I would encourage you to go to Japan and train there. They have many good strong ITF schools but also a ton of excellent karate schools and other arts. And Japan is very exciting and interesting, it's my favorite place in the whole world. If you decide to go I'll give you numbers and addresses of ITF schools if you like.
