  • "That's really sad...but it certainly doesn't mean that Tae Kwon Do is not an effective martial art. Being a black belt does not guarantee victory, and being a white belt does not guarantee defeat. If a white belt knifehands a sixth degree blackbelt in the solarplexus, the sixth degree blackbelt is probably going to lose the fight. That doesn't mean that the sixth degree blackbelt's training was all for naught. Perhaps he flinched, or blinked, or something. Or maybe the street fighter had studied some form of martial art that was specialized in combatting Tae Kwon Do. Or maybe your master was having an off-day. It all depends on the application of the attacks."

That would be true, if the TEACHER HIMSELF hadn't been the guy to judge Tae Kwon Do.

See, all these comments make great sense.

But the thing everyone seems to be forgetting is that the 4th degree blackbelt, the guy who had done this his WHOLE LIFE in a country that LIVES AND BREATHES his sport (think: learnning BJJ in brazil)..THAT GUY is the one who said "Tae Kwon Do sucks for fighting". Not one of his students. Not some guy who heard the story. The teacher himself came to terms with the truth.

Hats off to him. He just made the hardest journey a man can perhaps make. To dedicate your life to an idea, to work that idea day in and day out, and then one day - to cast off the idea because it is useless.

Very tough decision to make. Most people seem to prefer to go on living the lie, defending the lie, and promoting the lie.

Not only did he avoid that pattern, he also went in and TOLD THE TRUTH to his students..

This guy is great. That is incredible honesty.

    Hats off to that guy.

      • Yeah, it didn't occur to me that I might be getting all worked up and teary-eyed over a mere story. Good point. Gullible - I am!

        Heh.

        • I was beatin up some months ago by a thug who caught me when i didn't expect it, it was out the blue and i didn't have the chance to sum up the situation to the make the judgement to fight i had no choice but to minimize the impacts of waht he was doing which i did very well considered from walking outside my local shop unexpectedly to be headbutted, kneed to the face punched and kicked in the face while on the ground to come away with only soft tissue damage is good, i did for ages after feel like an idiot for not being able to defend myself from what the did to me but when i thought over it, I had no chance it was out the blue i didn't know it was going to happen not being able to land anyting on him cut me up for ages aswell but i think it was some kind of lesson for me no matter what you do or who you are, theres gonna be times when something like that is gonna happen out the blue, and now i'm ready for anything i'm always aware of things and i don't take going to shops light hearted anymore to the point were i expect it to happen again

Snort. Please tell me that was a troll. All you have to do to beat Olympic TKD is punch to the head!

              • it's not so hard to get past a TKD person's feet.

Jam the kick and crack em in the head. it really is that simple.

It doesn't even have to be trained. It's very natural.

Even if they can kick hard enough to hurt your thigh with a roundhouse when you go for the jam, you can also scoop the kick (catching kick attacks is illegal under Olympic rules) and SLT them.

                  • hmm

how often do you see good people throw just 1 kick? ever seen the touch and go where they can kick 200 times in 1 min? well thats good but there are also side kicks to jam u

like hook kick then roundkick then side kick thats a combo i throw alot it never fails to work but then again ive never seen u guys spar so i cant say much

(and also.... why the hell dont you people kick to the head?? ive never understood that nor have i studied the rules) but all the matches i have seen at the US opens and BoA i never see kicks to the head

You must have some uncreative sparring partners then. I wouldn't ever open with a hook kick unless I wanted to roll around on the ground like a BJJer; do you know how easy it is to scoop hook kicks?

Who do you mean by "you guys" TKD guys? Guys like me that don't do TKD but know enough about martial arts to provide some constructive criticism? Forumites? I used a kick to the head once. When it is used on me, I usually block.

                      • eh owell lol

well i will state the fact that my TKD studio isnt even medium contact (unless me and my friend are sparring) so a hook kick can throw someones arm down and let the roundkick hit them in the head then pull back and side kick in the ribs works for me

im looking for a more intense TKD school but i cant find 1 :P

have u ever gone to the us opens? or BoA?

You see this is what I'm talking about! That was what I meant when I was referring to the formation of bad habits! You believed that your technique would work because it does in your classroom. Your classroom by your own admission doesn't allow full-contact sparring so you never learned better.
