  • To all BJJ Advanced Belts

Do you believe it's possible to achieve the highest ranks (like black belt), simply by being a dedicated student and attending class religiously?

Or do you think most of these students learned from videos, books, seminars, etc etc as well?

The reason I ask is that I don't have too much time to dedicate to MA because of my career and finances. Maybe 3 times a week for classes but I'd like to progress to all the belt ranks eventually ( I realize this is a big task in BJJ and I am willing for it to take 10 years). Is this a system where this is possible?

    Thanks for your input

Think of it like a bucket with a hole in it.

If you fill up your bucket faster than the hole lets it out, it'll still fill at a certain slow rate

if you aren't filling it up with enough, the hole will let out more than you put in, and the level will stall or even decline.

3 times a week is probably good for a long while, and by that time, you might find out that getting your Brown Belt is more important than saving money for a new ski boat.

    What rank are you now?

i believe you have hasd to gone through it all tourny's, smeinars, and stuff like that.

there is one quote that caught me in the grapplers blueprint that has inspired me.

" The first 40 hours of your work week are for survival,
everything else you do above and beyond those 40 hours is
      for success "

the thing is that getting a BJJ black belt is not an easy task... Besides why do you want a black belt?

If you want anything in life that is difficult to attain, you have to have the passion and determination to really want it and you'll finally get it........

                  Balancing BJJ and Career

Hi Guys thanks for the input.

Unfortunately career is my life. Jujitsu is my hobby. So I can only afford to attend class 3 times a week, and not constantly think about it. I need to keep my mind on the money which is my career!

Any other individuals here post 30 years old who only train say 3 times a week and make very good progress, some even into the higher belts?

What is your current rank? And what is your career? (just curious on the career part)

Sure you can advance, but you have to be willing to do what it takes. up to purple belt, you'll be fine. But at that point, you might find out that you just aren't progressing or learning enough to advance. Brown and Black belts from a true Gracie aren't easy to get.

                      Rank and Career

I'm only a white belt. I'm 34 years old and too old to think that one day I'm going to be in NAGA if I start now. My career is in Information Technology -- I'm a programmer analyst and I bring home a fat paycheck, and that is more important in my life since I have to pay the mortage, am married, and will soon start a family of my own etc, than simply blowing all my cash on my hobbies like when I was a teenager.

I figure I can dedicate about 3 days a week (2 hours a session) to juijitsu. Over the long haul like 10 years I figure even 3 training sessions a week can add up to some major progress. Too many people think like extremists training 6 days a week but drop out after 2-3 years. I think of MA for long term. I want to be doing this sport into my 70's if possible like Gene Lebell.

In 10 years time I hope I can attain a Black Belt in BJJ training consistently 3 times a week. If this is not possible in BJJ then I may have to settle for a lower rank like brown or purple in BJJ, and supplement my study with other grappling arts like shoot wrestling, judo, submission grappling etc to attain a black belt.

Its strange. WHen I was in mid 20's and did MA I just wanted to beat up on people and didn't care about rank. Now I don't want to beat up on people, and care more about skill and progress.

You don't want to beat up on people? Man. That's just sick.

I don't know a single brown or black belt from a Gracie school that Jiu Jitsu isn't their #1 priority.

Actually Thai Brai, CORRECTION, I do want to still beat up on people but only if its done using proper technique, and skill!
