I am 16 years old and have been doing jiu-jitsu for about 5-6 months now. I have been stronger and probably always will be stronger than a guy in our class who weighs <140 pounds. I weight about 190 and bench about 275 (not much, but definitely more than the under 140 pound guy). After 6 months, I have gotten to the point where I can beat him for about 5 minutes.... but I still get tapped.

That's the beauty of good martial arts, it teaches you to use YOUR strengths to defeat YOUR opponents weaknesses. There is always a bigger fish in the sea.... but that still leaves the question of who is the smarter? If you can outsmart your opponent, you've won. I guess one day, Helio Gracie or someone decided that they could use somebody's own shoulder to choke them, and voila, you've got the triangle, lol. Judo and Jiu-jitsu guys are world-class scientists at anatomy and physics!

Dude how far back are you going to go until you get what you consider a "win".....well if you start grappling with neonates or hemiplegics, then yes it will not matter the lock or hold. Size is not the issue, look at the early UFC to see BJJ with no weight classes.

Listen, you are not letting go. Every move has a counter. You counter a move, generally, before it is firmly applied-very general. To get to that point you need to develop sesitivity which comes from training. There are several varations for locks, chokes, holds you just got a small taste. My advice is toughen up, stop being a wuss and STOP becuase a 13yr old schooled you.

I assume you went to a BJJ dojo for a reason, part of your name is BJJ, you seem intereted in BJJ....well go train and you will have all the answers to your questions. Again, a 13yrs old wreslter or judoka may have put you on your ass as well, so what. Do you want to learn something and improve your skill or cry about what you perceive to be a "loss".

      No flame my 25 cents

Just wondering if it's possibe to get out of a sleeper by reaching behind your head and pulling away the back arm?

Highly unlikely. If the rear naked choke is in THAT deep you don't have time to try and muscle it loose. Best thing to do is drill twisting and ducking out before its locked. Have someone sit behind you, hooks in, and start the rear naked. Practice going away from the choke and getting your shoulders to the ground. Rep this drill like crazy, pretty soon it will become reflex.

Once the choke is locked, your only chance is to drop down, and get the pressure from your throat onto your jaw. You can push up on your opponents elbow to help this. Then work an escape. It's not easy, and if they are any good you have about 2 seconds to pull it off. Best thing to do if someone locks a rear naked in during training is tap, and practice blocking the choke.

If you reach up to try to peel it off, he can switch to a sleeper hold variation that locks your arm as well, then you're really screwed. In short just don't reach back and try to peel it ff.

                  Baa Bbaa

hey billzbjj why dont you just stop worrying about getting tapped by that kid.. even though he's 13 your not that big for a 23 year old. you said you were what ? 5'9 140 ?? anyways though the thing with bjj and judo etc.. is the 2 on 1 idea.. you use 2 of your limbs against one of your opponemnts.. obviously you can see the advantages.. also the point in BJJ is to put your opponent in a position where you are more experienced and he is less... for example a 16 yr old olympic swimmer fighting say mike tyson.. (assuming mike tyson cannot swim) Throw them both into a pool and tell them to fight.. obviously the swimmer has a better chance because he is more experienced in this element.. see what im getting at ?? BJJ takes your opponent out of their element OR puts you into an element where you are experienced the most in...

Wise up. You were not beaten by a kid. You were beaten by BJJ.
If you have an ego problem about losing a lot for a while, BJJ is not for you.
The only way you will improve is to put yourself in position to tap a lot.
Class sparing is not about who taps. it's about who learns.

Now, get on the mat and work on your tapping techniques.
