          • Only read the last page.. but this was somewhat interesting...

I often find it funny that sport martial artists, myself included, always give respect to their opponents at the end of their fight etc....

I've never understood this, I do it when its deserved, and I slap hands before a roll, or bow before randori, etc... But whats with all the post fight hugging and that.

In all of my sessions of full out sparring mma style, I've maybe only given two guys "props", its not because the others arent fighting hard, its not that I'm owning them and dont need to give them respect (probably the other way around 90% of the time).

After having it out for 5 minutes in the hardest fought clinch of my life with a 40 pound heavier provincial silver medallist wrestler... where we beat the shit out of each other (we were supposed to go to the ground after one minute of standup, but it just continued). Then we gave each other respect, and the other time was after I got subbed after a HARD fought BJJ roll.

It's not that I'm disrespectful, I respect everyone that comes out whether they have skills I should respect, or lesser skills. I dont know whats with all of this post fight hugging and shit.

An example of good respect. Muhammad Ali saying Joe Frazier was the second best heavyweight of all time next to him (Highest compliment Ali could give) -- After their third fight.

An example of meaningless respect, i dont know, dont mean to pick on UFC or Tuf guys, but like.. Kenny Florian hugging Alex Karalexis after their fight or dumb shit like that.... pointless... and its just posturing, I doubt he would have done that had their not been "social pressure" to do so.

            Anyway, I'm rambling.

            • I allways get a stupid comment when i mention i'm a martial artist. I had one person ask "could you kill someone with your bare hands" I try not to bring it up. Often, when I meet girls we talk about hobbies and it does come up. Sometimes there is a remark like "oh u can protect me". I think people have to understand just becasue you are a black belt does not give you superhuman powers. Someone at work found out that i was doing martial arts, he is a student of aikido. This guy allways makes remarrks like "oh u have to watch out for them" It annoyed me at first, but I realized most people really don't understand. This guy , who is a really nice guy and not the type to say something to annoy you, wasnt doing it to annoy anyone. If he thought he was annoying someone he wouldnt say it. So after thinking about it that way I think that maybe we misunderstand people who make comments. The fact is they don't know better.

              • In my sociology class my teacher mentioned that people are driven by 2 things, sex and aggression. He commented on how much American like ultimate fighting, indirectly saying its a brutal violent cage match...this was a week after I handed in a supplumental sheet on a subculture I belonged to...mixed martial arts.

I also note that most people who practice these arts (including boxing) rarely point out that they do such things. Usually they tell their friends because they were asked, and then th eir friends are like "THIS GUY KNOWS KARATE MAN HE'LL KICK YOUR ASS". Geez, I hate people who talk for you, they make want to pop them in the face more than anything. They give you a bad name..people think you're violent and "uncontrolable and will punch you in the face just because they can", despite the fact you've never hurt a fly or shown any signs of aggression towards anything. And then when people call it karate...I correct them and they're just like "WHATEVER SAME THING!!!"

                hate it.

Then the people who go to mcdojo's are the ones who think they are the unbeaable martial artist. They are like "man I could kick you 4 times in 1 second, or do a double spinning back kick". I just say..."why yes..yes you could." because it'll end up in an argument, me saying the extra flash is pretty worthless..them denying it..saying it's the u;timate system...

All this arguing, when both the people know the only way to prove it is to actually fight, as that is what they were made for. The mcdojo goer continues to brag, and usher the fight which he doesn't want to happen. I daresay if I were to actually attack him he'd piss his pants.

                Sigh...

                • i agree. the one thing that pisses me off, no offense to the shorter bigger built guys, but when you run into one of these guys that look jacked and think there tough they always play the "i could kick your ass card." when in reality they puch like a panzy. they wear there wife beaters and all that jazz. i wear wife beaters but thats when its really hot and in the comfort of my home. i spar with a couple of huge guys and they hit like my sister. i dont know, it pisses me off when they think they are better than you at fighting and you dont really want to start shit with them because your calm and not big headed.

Well..it was a page..we described our subculture in a paragraph or two, listed some jargon/argot related to it..then one paragraph on why it was a subculture. I talked about the arm bar..kimura...how the name gracie means more to a MMAist then the average guy.

Nothing special, but if you really want..
