In my eyes it obviously is, but let's see if the members of this forum have the ability to see the obvious.

BJJ owns, especially if you have enough standup to keep you out of the worst of trouble outside of trapping or clinching range.
The smart BJJ'er combines (practiced) striking with his takedown and groundmoves to make it a pretty devastating.
I know of a BJJ school housed in a Karate school where the karate BB's get there ever loving asses handed to them by BJJ whitebelts (and no, I wont say who or where).
Here's a vid of a kickboxer (obviously no grappling experience) working with a BJJ fella... The fight doesn't start until 0:44, so skip ahead if you want.

And I'm gonna laugh when you get in a streetfight, take a guy to the ground to start grappling with him, and 3 of his buddies pop out of nowhere and proceed to monkey-stomp your brains out of your school and then FedEx them to your poor grieving mother. In a streetfight, sure you want to know how to groundfight, but only to get the motherfucker off of you so you can stand up and stomp on him. Just remember: not all streetfights deal with one opponent, often there's more than one and if you're on the ground armbarring one the other has free stomps to your head.Originally posted by Ahoym8eBJJ owns, especially if you have enough standup to keep you out of the worst of trouble outside of trapping or clinching range.

:sigh:
I guess BJJ = only armbars?
sure they're in there, but Chi Sao 'doesn't =' all asian fighting arts either...
Trust me there are plenty of ways to finish an opponent quickly in BJJ.
Don't believe me? join a BJJ school for a bit...
And all the "well, what if his 5 friends jump out of the bushes while you're on the ground" comments are for the birds too, because if 5 buddies jump in the fight you need to haul ass anyway, whether you're grappling or boxing...
If I have him in an armbar when they jump out of the bush, snap goes the arm, haul ass goes Ahoym8e and his buddies stay to help the first asshole...

I trained in shooto and submission wrestling for a while with an Okinawan friend of mine when I was stationed over there. I was merely using the armbar as an example.Originally posted by Ahoym8eI guess BJJ = only armbars?

Think about it, though: If you're standing up and his buddys appear, its much easier to run than if you're on the ground holding him in say a triangle choke. And also remember: you're fighting on a nice hard street that's probably covered with broken glass, trash, and other not-so-nice things that you'll be rolling around in, not to mention that as already stated if he's got a knife he can stick you a lot easier if the first thing you do is take him to the ground and get in your guard or something silly like that. And all the "well, what if his 5 friends jump out of the bushes while you're on the ground" comments are for the birds too, because if 5 buddies jump in the fight you need to haul ass anyway, whether you're grappling or boxing...

And any witnesses nearby will swear it looked like you started the fight and you'll get nailed with excessive force, cause once the cops come and see his face looking like dog meat, you're not going to be in too good of a position. The mount's naturally a very agressive posture, and if you see a guy on top of someone like that pounding another guy's face in, more than likely they're going to side with your opponent, unless he has some sort of visible weapon, say a switchblade. Try groundfighting a guy with a switchblade and see what happensOriginally posted by Tap4MeBJJ can be effective in street fights, NOT ALL STREET FIGHTS contain multiples. Grapplers have grappling skill, take the guy down, mount him, beat the shit out of his face. He can do very little from the position.

yes I agree. on the street the guard ought to be reserved fro when you're losing the grappling...
Triangle in the street makes me laugh too. that would be funny. or omoplata!

I'm not saying BJJ is entirely unsuitable for self-defense, I feel it can be effective, but saying its the ultimate weapon and your first line of offense in a streetfight is ridiculous. Fight standing up until you have no choice to go to the ground, then once you are on the ground get up as quickly as you can.
