Knee on stomach is underated, it is such a dominant position and a good way to set up a collar choke or armbar, even if they get out of knee on stomach in the process you can usually get a choke or armbar, also if you wanted to punch someone from here they are screwed. Watch Carlos Newton and Vitor belfort use it with great success in NHB. Tip: instead of putting your knee on their belly put it on their sternum where the ribs meet, they will not be breathing easy.

DD... i said for PRACTICE! using no arms or hands just helps to further develop balance for this position. of course during regular sparring use all you can use. but think about it, if you develop your balance well enough with NO hands, then you can use your hands for other things while riding like... submissions, feinting, etc...

I know of some people who prefer knee on the stomach to mount for self defense/street fighting because there is less commitment needed.

                  Some points to consider

I think someone already mentioned a little of this BUT here are some things I do for NO-GI work:

Assuming your RIGHT knee is on his chest/stomach:

When you're cross body, underhook his head/neck with your left arm (palm up). AS you come onto the KOS using your RIGHT knee, pull up HARD under his neck and HOLD that position when you mount with your knee! This is TORTUREOUS! You MUST turn your palm UP so that his head is resting on the inside of your forearm / wrist when you do this. This will help you pull.

Keeping the head UP is important to inhibit his escapes, control his movement and apply pressure!

Another thing, after you have come onto your knee and you're underhooking his head/neck, switch now so that your RIGHT arm is behind his head/neck (You can also use your RIGHT arm to underhook his shoulder). Control his RIGHT arm with your LEFT arm behind his tricep. In this way you can defend from him attacking your groin if it's a street fight.

This method puts a great deal of pressure on your opponent and makes it very difficult to use an escape that won't make you vulnerable to strikes or subs.

My two cents (all that I can afford here at X-MAS!)

                  John

During a Rey Diogo seminar, I learned a couple of key points that really helped me with this position.

(I actually prefer this to mount a lot of times, because I normally spar guys who are so thick in the midsection, that I don't have good balance in mount)

A lot of people just kind of "hop up" into the position and stay there. If you don't pull up HARD with both hands, keep your weight onto your knee and most importantly,
*your back straight*, you will probably get rolled.

I think if you stick KOS, pull hard, drive down onto the sternum, and keep your back straight, you can get a tap with the position alone. However, I think it's awesome for setting up subs. It's painful, so the guy will instinctively either move his hips, or usually push with his far arm. (Even though I know escapes to it, I have to consciously fight the urge to push the knee w/my far hand.)

I really like the collar choke from here.. the one where you put your bottom hand into the far collar and sprawl to north/south. NIIIIICE!
