I dont know BJJ but whats the best way to get someone off the top of you?

  • I dont know BJJ but whats the best way to get someone off the top of you?

    If you are on the ground and someone is strattling you and going to punch you over and over and choke you. What movements are the best way to get the guy off of you?

    I dont know grappeling very much.

    Do you roll your hips to the side to make him fall off, do you thrust your hips up and make him fall forward over you? Do you grab his arm and try to lock it to make him fall off to the side of you? Do you put your foot around his anklpe and hook your arm around his arm and then twist your hips to the side to make him fall off?

    PLease help me out. I have been thinking about this recently. I have learned some techniques in my martial arts class but havnt really done any grappeling.

    Strattling you? As in you are between their legs???

    Key to BJJ: It's 90% hip movement, when you're in the guard (on the bottom)

      Horrible body odor...being fat and unkempt is also a plus if you don't want some fool on top of you...seriously...who would wan't to grapple with some disgusting, lard-ass bastard???
      Run for the beans...pack on dem pounds...and you'll be where you need to be. People will run from you, much less tackle you to the ground and have to deal with trying to get position...
      Maybe pig wrestling hicks would pose a problem...but not the average joe.

        All of the above and if those dont work try something else But It is best to not get in that position to start with!

            You are correct.
            You grab his arms to avoid him punching you, (watch out for the arm bar).
            then put your foot around his ankle.
            lift your hips and roll the same side you got his ankle 'got'.
            If he spread his leg to avoid the wrap around his ankle, just pull your knee in to put him back to a half-guard.

              The technique you need to learn is called "bridge and roll".

              Have a look at this site:


              Seriously, though, go into a BJJ class and ask the teacher to show you bridge and roll - the best way to learn any BJJ technique is with a person in front of you pointing out the intricacies.

                I am pretty decent at stand up fighting. Its just sometimes I want to teach some basic self defense.

                I know its bad to get in this position but I was thinking more of the lines of teaching women how to get people off of them to get out of there fast.

                I learned a few things in black belt classes. Also some guy who claimed he was training in BJJ tuaght me how to get someone into the arm bar when he is on top of you. All he showed me was you have to wiggle your legs out from under him and then push his chest with your feet so he falls to the side and then you have his arm in the lock.

                but thanks for answering me and letting me know if what I had in mind was valid.

                  My sparring partner is a bit bigger and stronger than I am with a pretty decent mount. Last night a new techinque I found was the following:

                  When mounted, hip up and toss his weight to either the right or left side. As you hip up, take whatever side he is going to and take your opposite arm and slide it under his leg. If you hip and toss to the left, take your right arm, and go beneath his left left hooking the ankle area, continuing to use his momentum to push him off of you. The movement has to be quick because if you can't toss him, your arm is now trapped.

                  That is one method I have found against my partner. This might not work depending on your partner or opponent but I have found it useful.

                    okay so you hip up and toss to the side i get it.
                    But how exactly do you grab under his leg again? I didnt understand it. What part of the left and what angle do you grab his ankle?

                      When you hip up, do it hard enough and his knees should come off the ground. That should give you enough space to slid you hand in there. Turn you wrist over, palm upward and just slide it under his leg/thigh area and shoot for the ankle. Grab tightly and continue to toss him whichever way he is already going. I supposed your hand could be gripping from the top of the foot/ankle area but I found better leverage with my wrists kinda wrapped under the other side of my partner's ankle if you understand what I'm saying. Not sure if there is a name for this technique or not and I wish I could illustrate better.

                        This question speaks to a larger issue.

                        It doesn't matter how many techniques someone explains to you or shows you. You need to be able to apply these techniques effectively against resisting opponents. You need to have a functioning skill set, not just know a set of skills.

                        It's very possible that someone can demo a bridge-and-roll but not be able to do it live. It's also possible that someone can learn this particular technique and become decent at it, but still doesn't mean they have a "game" when it comes to escapes. What happens if the bridge-and-roll doesn't work, if your opponent recovers or counters when you're trying to do it? Anyone can learn a technique, just as anyone can learn how to say or write a term in a foreign language. Without the alive, functional game, however, there is no fluency. There is no two ways around this.

                        Learn some fundamentally sound escapes, drill them technically (without relying on strength), and with progressive resistance against real people. And have fun.

                            why dont you teach them how not to get in that position to start with. If you have good stand up you should be able to do that.

                              Well look you can teach people some good stand up techniques but it doesnt mean they are NEVER going to get taken down.

                              A lot of stuff can happen and its good to teach them ground techniques to get people off the top of you. All I care about is teaching some simple basic, yet effective things to burn into their brains and muscles to defend themselves.
