Wrestling is very helpful in whatever martial art you practice. Before I wrestled in high school I considered myself in good shape because I had been doing martial arts but I got in much better shape after joining the wrestling team. The wrestling will help you with takedowns, no gi work, keeping your weight on your opponent, riding, balance, and you also will learn important moves like standups, switches and breakdowns. If you want to compete in shootfighting you will have to modify the techniques because striking is allowed.

With out the basics of wrestling all locks and holds are useless. One needs to have a solid foundation of how to control and move on the ground before they can go any further. My little brother quit martial arts to take wrestling and I had absolutely no problem with it. If anything, I think it might have been good for him to start with wrestling. I can’t even begin to think of all of the MMA fighters that began in wrestling; many of them being UFC belt holders at one point or another.
