Vegemite is so good and was actually invented in 1922, so was around in my grandparent's time (not since the 80's). Tom is assuming that because the first time he heard of vegemite was in the song by Men at Work that that is when it came about, but it has been an Australian icon for many, many years.
My favourite vegemite moment was when an American friend of mine wanted to try it and put a thick slab on a piece of bread. I tried explaining to him that you only need a little bit as it has a strong flavour, but he would not listen. The look on his face was priceless.
When I lived in Kansas, my roommate wanted to try vegemite, so I put some on toast for her, and I actually took a photo of the moment it hit her taste buds - LOL!!!
Vegemite was invented as a way to use the by-products of beer-making. It's a black, salty, yeasty paste. There is a New Zealand version called promite, and it's not quite as strong tasting, and a little bit sweet as well as salty. There's also marmite, which is British I think, and it not as strong as vegemite either, but not sweet like promite.
In that case, when I go to the tournaments, I like to see which strong, virile man wins the heavyweight match, because clearly he has good muscle tone, conditioning, and skills, which could help him to build me a cabin and kill the bears to protect me and my baby...
