I knew this was going to happen, the poor guy just got blown out of the water. Hughes is a phenominal athelete and fighter, but Royce is a 6th degree in BJJ, its a shame he couldn't get to gaurd, I really though his skills would get him there.
.
Maybe he shoulda just sat down at the bell and buttscooted huh? Then maybe Matt would have just layed down in his gaurd for him couldnt get to the gaurd...hmm yeah too much emphasis on ONE thing....didnt I just cover this yesterday in the "top or bottom thread"? when all you have is a guard...everything looks like a screw.
Take credit away from Royce? Absolutely fraggin not! But I kinda look at it like Hank Aaron at his best, trying to compete against baseball players of today... Athletes in every sport evolve and improve, but you can't take anything away from the people who opened the big whup ass can.
A win is a win. The problem Royce Gracie faces now is that BJJ (and judo grappling in general) is no longer an unknown/forgotten art. The best fighters in the Octogon today have a good, balanced blend of skills on the mat as well as standing up, striking, kicking and grappling. Matt Hughes and Rich Franklin are great examples of this, and their recent successes in the UFC prove that.
They are no longer one trick ponies like the earlier UFC fighers were when this whole show started in the '90s.
Matt winning should move the martial arts forward and do away with the dangerous one style is superior myth...or people will just make excuses, thats easier so thats probably all that will happen.
Well done to Matt. I love Royce dearly, and this doesn't change the way I feel about him. But credit where credit's due. Congratulations to Matt for answering a question that a lot of people have had for a long time.
well as i believed a win to matt huges was right on the money as these fighters today in mma are in a dynasty of their own and it will only get better much respect to royce. We will always have a similar result as the old skool fighters try to step up and make a move on the new breed see what happened with ken and tito i have no doubt he will lose again also.Anyway royce you are a legend and you opened the door for me and thousands of others to the world of bjj that alone is an accomplishment far better than winning a fight. And matt another well deserved win who i have no doubt will join royce also in the hall of fame cheers mma forever.
