Its not funny, it was pretty sad/shocking to watch that beatdown on live tv. Royce didnt perform too well, he made a mistake while standing up...that Fairtex training led to his demise. That stupid right hand he threw allowed Matt to get his back pretty much.

No, the stand up didnt cost him the fight, it just caused it to end quicker. Seeing how Hughes was alot better on the ground, Royce wouldve lost no matter what.

No, there was always Rickson. Royce was the Gracies' underdog that they threw into fights to show ppl that a smaller, weaker guy could win. If they put Rickson in, GJJ would have just looked like wrestling.
But for some reason, Rickson wasnt there last night. He's the only Gracie that was ever well rounded. If he fought a Kickboxer, he would standup(until it went to a clinch) and beat him up. If he fought a wrestler, Rickson would get the takedown. But now BJJ looks bad cuz of Royce.......aside from the fact that there was a lot of technical submissions last night.

UFC has evolved to emphasize the importance of a "well-rounded" fighter with a large tool box of skills, but in doing so everybody has forgotten the joy of development their own chosen art.
We're comparing ourselves to MMA professional competitiors. In reality, a minority of people involved in martial arts compete in mixed art venues and as for self-defense, any martial artist can usually defend himself effectively not because of what he may or may not have studied but because of his physical fitness, strength and more importantly his mindset regarding self defense.

royce gracie touched my genitals once. i went to say hi to him at a tournament and much to my surprise, he pushed me up against the wall and groped my privates and then left like nothing had happened.this is a true story btw

Same thing happened to me in Miami with Helio back in 1967. I was very young at the time and studying judo, which is what every good li'l Cuban boy studied at the time. Judo for the boys, ballet for the girls. Oh, and beisbol - during season.

In all honesty, my heart was with Royce. I wanted to see him win, both because he was the distinct underdog, and because I've trained with so many people from his place. Not to mention the fact (not speculation, but FACT) that no one's ground game would be where it is today, to include Matt Hughes', had Royce not come first and done what he did in the early days. With that said,

I'm glad Hughes won that fight.

Not only is Matt a humble guy, and a great fighter, he is far more well-rounded. I have always, always preached that you have to know how to function well in every range (and if you don't believe me, see the article I wrote for Black Belt way back in 1999 called 10 Commandments of Combat. Pay particular attention to the very first commandment which read, as I recall, "Thou shaly become educated in all ranges of fighting neglecting not weapons, kicking, punching, trapping, or groundfighting."). Given the fact that Gracie Jiujitsu is built on the premise that their style is enough, I have always been a little at odds with their philosophy. It is nice to see the well-rounded guy do what a well-rounded guy should do against a more one-dimensional fighter.

It does make me wonder what the Gracies will do as a result, though. Will they seek to evolve with this thing they created? Will they add in the cross training that obviously wasn't there in this fight? Will they become as well-rounded as the guys who are beating them these days? Who knows.

Actually, he's been training with boxers and kickboxers for over 10 years... and almost daily with this fight... he did crosstrain, but I agree it wasn't as much as it could have been.

I have been saying on this forum for over a month now that Hughes would dominate the ground... Royce(an accomplishes BJJ tournament fighter with lotsa trophies) is no match for Matt(A 5th placer in the NCAA D-1 champs) on the ground. Goes along with another thing I said, teach a good wrestler bout 6 months of consistent BJJ, and he'll wreck a BJJ practitioner with 6 months of consistent wrestling... one is superior to the other...(though I train BJJ... sub's are only one aspect of the ground). Also I think it's funny that people are surprised that Hughes took him down... I'm only surprised it took him so long.

Ok, that aside, how strong and technical was the sub attempt by Hughes... and I'm looking for an unbiased analisis if I can get it.

Matt's got a great ground game, however...

Royce's is probably better, but Hughes overwhelmed him with his strength and totally sapped Royce of his energy.
