Would that be "cheating"? Yeah! That's why Royce lost! LOL Matt H is a steroid monster.

Look at him in his wrestling days, he was still big and strong... he's just a big strong guy... this was a stupid post lol.

How did Hughes do as far as the submission attempt... was it sloppy or did he get there with technique?

Hughes' straight keylock armbar(which was from half guard) would have tapped most guys pretty quickly. But Royce had some freakishly flexibly joints. His arm was definetly hyper extended and it was popping. I dont know how Royce got out of it, but i imagine he used alot of effort and will power to do it.

Ive watched the PPV over and over...and if i didnt know Hughes' background, i'd think he was a definite jiu jitsufighter the way he was positioning his hips, legs, and everything else on the ground. I think its safe to say that Matt Hughes was using his jiu jitsu(on the ground mostly) blended with his wrestling takedowns and top control.

..........But that Guillard KO was better than a Liddel one. Its exactly like that felony fights video where that mexican guy drops the white dude with 1 punch.

I give Hughes credit for his performance last night, even though I train with the Gracie camp.

To me, it looked like Royce just didn't even do much. Everything he should've done to defend and improve his positions, he didn't do (such as try harder to recover guard, and turtle up harder instead of completely giving up his back). I have heard from a VERY reliable source though, that Royce wasn't really himself last night. He pretty much froze up under pressure. I'll probably find out more details this week and when I do, I'll share what I know.

That said, that straight arm kimura didn't look very "clean" to me. That same source tells me that Royce's arm was actually fine, being that he has a very flexible joint. I think Hughes got as far as he did with the sub attempt due to the fact that he is able to power his way through many things.

Royce seemed very stiff and rigid when he was fighting. When he was in the octagon(prior to the fight) he didnt even move. I thought for sure Royce was going to be faster and more flexible to get into full guard...but he didnt do that...i hope Matt H. submits his next opponent.

I just saw it on limewire and I'm in awe. He completly dominated, and this should shut up any logical or reasonable person who said Hughes' submissions and BJJ hasn't improved.

Ummm... no, if I hadn't known, I would have said he was a wrestler who knew jiu-jitsu... and what do ya know, THAT'S WHAT HE IS. There seems to be a prevalent thought amongsts martial artists that wrestling is inferior to BJJ, when in fact the only area that BJJ is better is submissions. I actually think wrestling has better manipulation of joints, but the downfall is they are only used to control and manuver, not to submit. His hips... wrestling. His legs... 100% wrestling. In fact, had it been a mat, Hughes leg riding like that could have been a college wrestling match.

                  Who is your reliable source?

It was clean, I saw it and was impressed, as most were. Royce has faced powerful guys in all different positions before, and I think it was technique, coupled with power that got Hughes that lock.

Well, my brother and his buddy(both have been doing BJJ and MMA for a while) were there watching the fight, and they said if Matt really wanted to break Royce's arm, he could have done it.

But the 155'ers stole the show.

No... lol I was talking to shamster, asking him who his supposedly VERY reliable source was. But I agree, it did seem like he let him off easy, he even said after the fight in a sherdog interview that he kept telling Big John that his arm was popping.

Someone who is very close to one of the Gracies, who happened to be Royce's cornerman last night.

Well that works... but, remember, he has fought many fights under great pressure, if anyone can handle it, it's him. I think that's just protecting his guy and saving face. Him saying that doesn't make him a credible source.

Yep, I am right Anyhow, what I heard so far is second hand info from others in class. That's why I don't wanna say too much now. I'll verify more details myself when I go to my next class.

True, Royce has fought many fights in the past, but I think this one has the most hype and publicity generated. I do believe Royce "froze up" though...not only cause of what I heard, but it looked like Royce didn't do much. He hardly looked like he even tried to recover guard. Also, in this case, I don't think it's a matter of saving face. Everyone already accepts that Hughes did clearly dominate, including Royce and his camp. It's now just a matter of learning from what went wrong.

I think we all expected this outcome, but a lot of us had to cheer for Gracie for the simple fact that he is a Gracie.

Hughes was really good at passing guard and gaining dominant position on the ground, and really... that's a BJJ thing... so like Royce said... the manner of loss was a compliment to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. As history has shown time and again, the students have once again become the masters, and the art (or science) is better for it.

I still want to see hughes fight newton again.
