  • Rumors of MMA in next olympics

    Hi everyone,

No doubt we are all watching the Olympics and aspiring to be the next great Olympic superstar. Anyways, I heard that mixed martial arts might be introduced to the next Olympics in 2012 under the name of "Pankration". Can anyone confirm this for me? Thanks

First they'd have to introduce some hopelessly retarded scoring system. Preferably electronic.

On a serious note, it doesn't appear that pankration will be on the Olympic menu in 2012

but it may be nominated for inclusion in the 2016 Olympic program

If they do put mma into the Olympics, I hope that it's the American/UFC version and not that Pankration shown on that Discovery/Nat'l Geo Channel show, which was beyond stupid. It seemed to be a combination of the old point karate and grappling.

For the record, I think that the martial arts world should work to getting rid of TKD in the Olympics (seems like a done deal) and try to get bjj, submission wrestling, muay Thai and mma in.

I think there has to be a recognised International governing body for the sport, which holds and abides by the Olympic charter. Also a shown history of the sport being played by an adequate number around the world.

No real governing body for MMA.

Not sure if they will ever allow MMA into the Olympics but I really would like to see it be a part of it. I know Jim Arvanitis (Mu Tau Pankration) has been pushing for it to be a part of it for over a decade now and still nothing. I would much rather see MMA than TKD in the Olympics. I feel if they are going to have Wrestling, Judo, TKD and Boxing then they should have MMA. They can come up with a set of rules that will work for MMA in the Olympics but in order to do that they will need to sit down and allow the MMA fighters and organizations to come up with and agree with the rules.

I know that Matt Hume is supposed to be pushing for some sort of Amateur Pride program that will be the the Golden Gloves of mixed martial arts, but I haven't gotten wind of anything in particular yet (even while I was actively training at his gym). But I think if Amateur Pride becomes popularized, Olympic Pankration/MMA will be like it.

Mwa agreed on the Muay Thai,

for me the best would seem:

-Karate(also all styles, exclusion of the more dangerous technique's, like fully kicks in the nuts when you got an opponent pinned down on the ground)
-Muay Thai(more technique's used than in most fights! it isn't just about kicking, kneeing, punching and elbows!)
-Kung fu(Yes all styles vs eachother and as in competition fighting where close to all technique's are allowed, not the forms competitions ofcourse)

as for an point system *shrugs* every completed, and effective lock an point, every hit that is hard enough to injury your opponent if they didn't have protection on etc.

last thing I would like to see is the MMA as it is today(to much focus on groundfighting, too much technique's NOT allowed etc) in the olympics,
allow single/little joint technique's, get rid of the gloves or make em so that finger and hand technique's are usable, also get more standing fighting instead of the same old sitting on your opponent and hit all you can.
