Sorry bustr. I didn't mean to offend you. I would rather do squats than sit in a horse stance. You get the full range of motion and develop explosive power.
I don't believe in traditional training methods. There are better ways to develope your strength. However I admit that san shou is an auwsome style.
I just call it like i see it. If i see a good kung fu style that in my opinion is good then i openly admit it's good. (san shou). But if i see 99% of kung fu styles training unrealistically then i call shite on it.
But it doesn't really matter. If traditional styles are working for you then continue them.

I just think that alot of people are too quick to rule out traditional methods. Alot of "traditionalists" in KungFu and Karate forsake Horse training and ChiGung etc. then get their asses kicked. This reflects negatively on their art. But it's not the art's fault that they ignored the less comfortable aspects of training in favor of learning competition forms and point sparring.
Karate or KUngFu without tough training, be it speed bag work, makiwara work or horse training is only half an art. Unfortunately it's the half artists who are the most visible representatives of MA.

Most MMA fighters have not heard of San Shou. To train their upperbody throwing most tend to utilize Greco-Roman or Judo. If San Shou were more available and more promintent I believe that alot more MMA fighters would try it. It does have alot of benifits and is a good style.
The only problem I can see with it is that it lacks lower body takedowns. Leg takedowns are alot eaisier to attempt end execute and are much more prominent in the grappling world. I'd say about 90% of the takedowns in MMA are lower body.
I would say that san shou guys wouldn't do very well in NHB for the simple fact that they don't train any ground work what-so-ever. And it's not very popular so they don't have a large supply of high quality fighters. (Not to say that they don't have any) Cung le and Marvin Perry are really good.
The reason they don't do a lot of leg takedowns is becuase if the guys sprawls and they miss the takedown and end up in turtle they get penalized by points (i think) But they do have leg takedowns. They just prefer upperbody takedowns so they don't get penalized if they miss.
San shou would prepare you for the street just as much as boxing or kickboxing would. No elbows or knees but it still is very realistic.
Too many Redneck Brawlers in the UFC. I mean you got a handful of true Budo Spirit Martial Artists like George St.Pierre and Anderson Silva, but then the rest are ugly redneck brawlers.
I do think that the biggest value for studying san shou is learning how to counter kicking attacks with throws and takedowns. SS and Shooto address this area of reality fighting better than any other art. Just my two cents. J~
