I like Akitas. Akitas have ripped pitbulls apart. They're bigger, stronger and just as vicious as pitbulls, with more attacking power. Pitbulls are usually desirable because they're low maintanence, small and vicious.
But as far as defending yourself from a dog, its pretty easy. My friends use to raise pitbulls and used to think I was crazy because I was the only one who would play rough with them. I'd slapbox with them for fun. The reason I was confident enough to do this was becuase one of my early teachers taught me that dogs, at least domesticated dogs, have only one attack mechanism: The jaws. While their claws can scratch you, they're no real threat. I've found this to be true of nearly every dog I've encountered except for the akita. They have paws as big as a large human hand, with nails that really, really hurt. But still its the jaws you need to be concerned with. If you can control the head, you control the jaws. If you can control the jaws, its just a matter of time before you can make a move to subdue the dog.
