    • Bombs suck man. Down With Bombs! Thats a wussy way of killing someone. Just my opinion.

Anyway, Grappling is very useful combined with stand up. Either way you should have the training for both.

      • I think that in another thread a while back it was said that if you only learnt two skills as a martial artist, they would be boxing and grappling/wrestling. Everything else is just for show.

Two skills? Grappling and weapons (kali/escrima).

          • sounds like Joe has some homo issues with the whole grappling things..to say fighting is ONLY striking is a uneducated response..Do you really think fighting by beating somebody senseless makes you more of a "MAN"?? What a stupid thread..

                        • i trained in judo for a while under a judo coach who helped coach the usa olympic team. he said that to be good at judo, you must be built from the ground up, thus you must train in NEWAZA FIRST.

its because training in newaza will also make you good at tachiwaza!! however tachiwaza teaches you almost nothing about newaza other than mabye some grip breaking techniques and MABYE the uchimata or single/double leg from the knees that will land you in guard, armbar or triangle instead of a solid pass and pin. many of the same judo throws can be done from the knees, and the more you train in grappling the more aware you become of the standup. that is why you see low level jiu jitsu guys, even white belts, go into judo tournaments and take out blackbelts. jiu jitsu has lots of counters to tachiwaza as well.

                          • DH, I agree with you and I agree with your Judo coach.

I've found that the more confidence I had in my ground game, the more I was willing to take chances on my feet. Perhaps "take chances" isn't the correct verbage but once I gained a little confidence in working off of my back, the standup portion of my game exploded. My throws still suck and I really need to train Judo, just for my own personal sense of fullfillment, but I do agree that a good ground game has a direct cause and effect relationship with your standup game.

Really? Proof of this? Proof, not just one or two isolated cases.

go to some judo tournaments and you will see it for yourself. in fact, i know a BLUE belt in bjj who got awarded a brown belt in judo just today cause he mopped up in the blackbelt bracket at a local tournament. he won by submissions mostly, only a couple throws.
