And would like to add,
The good streetfighter, is often a streetfighter because it's one of the few things he is any good at.
It's an individual thing.
he will often be above average size, strength and fitness.
Very confident, efficient, direct, fearless and ruthless in a confrontation situation, have a unstoppable will to win at all costs and may even get a kick out it.
This is sometimes so stong that even if you physically beat them they will resort to weapons and/or a repeat episode but they will load the dice in their favour, suprise attack or mob-handed etc.
They may well have a fair bit of various martial arts experience, but probably never staying in any one, too long.
Their objective is purely to win, not to have a good performance with good tecnique and show good sportsmanship, or Using fair rules.
But the facts remain, they must be good at what they do or else they simply wouldnt do it.
As mentioned earlier, the only way to learn to streetfight is to streetfight !
But most of us do not wish to conduct ourselves in such a barbarian manner.
So we turn to the next best thing....MARTIAL ARTS !!!!
They are two different worlds.
But an instructor of any dicipline, is not going to tell you that.
HE HAS A VESTED INTEREST !!!
I have attended many martial arts over the years and muay thai and bjja, apart, many of them were LAUGHABLE!
I have upset many an instructor by pointing this out, and usually proving it against the instructor, and i am no superman.
As mentioned earlier, the poor students trust their instructors and they have a duty to the traditions of the respective martial arts to either tell the truth to the paying students or "TEACH-IT-PROPERLY".
The only trouble is "THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO"!!!
Some martial arts may have glorious pasts but this has not been handed down, the art has been lost in the translation of time.
There is more to it than the moves, the whole is greater than it's sum of parts. !!!!!!
i used to do .. day to day illegal activity and in the way i'd bump into those trying to stop me.. and thats the fighting i was involved in.. weather it was beating someone up or fighting one on one or weapons.. running from police.. nothing new... ..
"As soon as you concern yourself with the "good" and "bad" of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others weaken and defeat you." - Morihei Ueshiba
I would be interested to kow what your definition of a "streetfighter" is and why would a normal everday citizen end up in physical confrontation with such a person.
I assume we are not talking about you average, garden variety mugger or bag snatcher here.
BTW - my first post on a great forum: never a dull moment!
kid rock, tito ortiz fights for a living ...hes either out of range or hes hitting you streetfighter wouldnt even hit him . unless your streetfighter trains hard everyday he cant move half the speed and power of even the average nhb athlete he also lacks the timing . so why think that in a reality situation hes going to beat them all to the punch. its a little naive to say "well this guy may be able to make hamburger of me in the ring and beat me on the ground and kick my ass all over the ring but in the street when the chips are down and i get mad ill show him, ill gouge his eye out. yeah right...
I agree. Of course there are beter ways to streetfight than MMA fighting. But someone at the top of the MMA game is going to blow 99.9% of the oppostion away anyway.
I agree with you guys Tito is a great fighter in the octagon, but there are many things you are not taking into consideration. For example, was Tito trained to fiht multiple attackers, improvised or concealed weapons, adapting to the enviroment at the moment of the confrontation, the clothes they are wearing. All these elements come into play when you talk about street fighting. If our dear friend Tito has not been trained for this, chances are he can loose a fight as easily as the average martial artist.
I have seen a number of, if you like "proffesional-streetfighters" who do it as often as they can.
Usually they have been football hooligans, and when "it-all-goes-off, in or around the ground and the rest of us look for a safer place, they "switch-on" and they turn into "rabid-dogs".
But i have seen many of them, when confronted in a one-to-one situation with a big rough looking opponent,
appear to back down, with lots of appoogies etc.
(let me buy you a drink mate etc).
This however is usually a "rouse" ,
as soon as the opponent drops his guard or turns his back,
he is in for a suprise.........
cosh, bottle, glass, chair, brick, blade, stanley knife etc, etc.
i've even known of a guy who did this and then caught his victim unaware a little while later and slung a rope around his neck and preseeded to attemp to "hang-him" !!!
No matter how competant the victim is at any type of martial art it is rendered useless against the effective and determined streetfighter, as he will find a way around it.
I had a lady friend who's husband was a hardened streetfighter would fight anyone, anytime, anyplace etc,
but one day he picked on the wrong person and this other streetfighter ended up giving him a good hiding .
(hospital,broken bones etc)
But alas, that wasnt the end of the matter he waited a year or so and got his revenge, but this time he made sure the odds were firmly in his favour, and inflicted horrific injuries upon him late one night with a club hammer.
So he was a technically an inferior fighter who had lost the battle originally but made sure he won-the-war!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No martial art teaches you about the streetfighter.
Even the best nhb/vale tudo training will not test you for this.
Thats part of the reason why they are so effective.
it is the 3rd sytem of fighting, THE MISSING LINK.
1..........strikes and blows
2..........Grappelling/ground fighting,
3...........Streetfighting.( no holds barred and i mean absolutely- no holds, blows, weapons etc barred).
Originally posted by CHOKE UK I totally agree with many of the excellent posts.

Alot of this that you say is a good concept. 0Some sreet fighters are good because the have learned this is what they have to do to live where they must . Some neaghberhoods are not to healthy to live in .But when you must not being able to getout of there thats fair to say you have to learn to survive If more people would get involved with these type of kids earlyer then they could have a better future to Some fighters are just needing a little help to rise above the streets others well its been tolong for them hard now to change But real is real you made a point
