Hey guys, this is my first post and this looks like a great board. Im going to start taking a BJJ class in a couple weeks after I get final clearance from my doctor after having a shoulder surgery a couple months ago. I wanted to know who here lifts weights with the intent of gaining muscle and at the same time is taking a BJJ class or something similar. How do you balance the two activities and what can I do to maximize muscle gains while taking a BJJ class. By the way, I am very familiar with the safe intake of steroids so if that is the best route it isnt a problem.

Gaining muscle, lifting weights, and BJJ. Is it possible?

Before I started taking any classes I hit the weights and still do. The one thing that I would say you should look at is not trying to do too much when you hit the weights. Now my program only has one body part per day with some cardio. The most important thing is to train hard and rest.

I work out with weights three times a week. One thing different that I do is that I only rest thirty seconds between sets. I think that gives me a better edge for muscle endurance. I worked out with Royce Gracie a few weeks ago and he said that he did circuits with weights such as a set of squats, a set of deadlifts, then a set benches without resting between. If you've never met him, he is amazingly strong but doesn't have a lot of bulk size to slow him down.

I didnt mean that doctors would prescribe the drugs, I meant they would monitor your blood levels and such. Some will monitor your blood work and interpret the results if you simply ask. In America there is also such a thing as doctor-patient-confidentiality (meaning the doctor cant run to the cops after finding out you are on steroids). Youre going to have to say something better than simply "steroids are dangerous" without backing it up with facts. Its also legal in America to carry a personal amount of steroids across the border, and just as legal to import the same amount overseas. I think if it was such a huge problem the federal government certainly wouldnt allow that, now would it? Ive known way too many people who sensibly use steroids for performance enhancement and are perfectly healthy according to their Doctors and Ive also done steroids in the past with no problems, so please spare me the typical kneejerk reactions, sir.

Do tell us who he or she is, as they will not be a doctor for much longer.
Steroids are dangerous and immoral. And you, sir, are a twat.
the prescrition of steroids to help with muscle injuries is common.
name your favourite profesional athlete, i would bet he is, or has, taken some sort of steroid to help his performance, only problem is its hard to prove.

You wanted support, and you got it. Athletes today are more injury prone than those of yesteryear. Why? Many make use of steriods. These steroids strengthen and build the muscles of said athletes to unnatrual levels and at unnatural rates. The muscles grow too strong for the tendons that hold them to the bones, resulting in many an injury to both bones and soft tissue. Not to mention, shorten your life--maybe not too much of a loss for the human race. Has shoulder problems, uses steroids, and continues to use steroids--probably will wonder why he becomes injured again in not too long a time period. Maybe another side effect is a loss of brain tissue

That would probably be something like a steroid based prescription for an asthma inhaler. Try to bring something other than a prescription across the border and you'll be getting the body cavity search that you never wanted.
Long term effects of steroid use? Things like "bitch tits", hair loss, higher aggression levels (can get you in a lot of trouble), shorter temper (can get you in a lot of trouble), joint damage, and some other, more serious things.
