  • Zui Quan!

Hi guys! My name's Alhadis, and I'm new to these boards!

I came here in search of opportunities to learn about Zui Ba Xian Quan (or Zui Quan, for that matter!) See, I've played Dead or Alive 3 and learned about the Drunken Fist, and since then, I've been very interested in learning about it! How effective is it? How would an experienced Drunken Master stand up to somebody skilled in karate, for example? And lastly and most importantly, how can one hope to find a trainer? Is it possible? See, I live in a backwater country town, where only Karate, Judo and free-form is practiced... and Zui Quan interests me like crazy!

Thank you SO much in advance!

    - Alhadis!

You want my honest advice?... Take judo, boxing or Muay Thai, NOT drunken boxing... Sure, it looks impressive and fun, but it's also a sure way to get knocked silly.

Here's the dilemna... Drunken boxing asks you to act drunk, or be drunk... In which case, you can't see very well. Most of the time, your body is in an awkward position which is defensively perposterous.. . And finally, drunken boxing is just lacking in arsenal and reality... Take it from me, someone who's sparred a drunken monkey guy, leave it alone... Acting silly in a fight will get you knocked silly.

        Re: Zui Quan!

Oh... Err, well... I understand, I guess! See, I've been interested in practicing an ancient, obscure martial art that few people know of- rather than a "contemporary" martial art! (Oh, well! ) Are there any other really effective arts that most people wouldn't have heard of?

This may sound like an obvious comment but what you see in a computer game (or TV/films for that matter) is not a accurate representation of what a martial art really looks like. For a style like Drunken fist, I'm sure there are people that can pull it off and fight with it in the world, but you have to question its practicality.

In the Dead or Alive games, there is one character that does Jeet Kune Do (I can't remember his name - its been a while since I played it). The JKD you see in that game is nothing like how a JKD student trains (for those that don't know, the JKD character in the game imitates a theatrical Bruce Lee)!! Real life grapplers/wrestlers don't pick people up and throw then 20 feet in the air!

I'm sure a lot us wish we can kick ass and look good in the process!

Anyway, if you really are interested in learning drunken style kung fu, then your best bet is to take up kung fu/wushu. At least that will allow you to appreciate all the different kung fu styles out there. There are a lot of "exotic arts" outs there. I bet the majority of the non-martial artist public know what kickboxing is, but not Kali or Pentjak Silat!

          Good luck.

That would be Jann Lee- and yes, he's meant to be Tecmo's way of prodding fun at Bruce Lee! (In a good-natured way, though!) And yep, I think you'll find that a lot of Japanese fighting games are pretty exaggerated! Still... Jann Lee's flashy moves really wanted me to take up JKD!

Well, normally I'd agree with you! But once I played Hitomi (the female character who did Karate) on Dead or Alive 3, her stance (kami) was perfect! Just the way she remained in the right karate positions was spot on! So it made me get the impression that maybe the martial arts in DoA3 were totally accurate! Even the technique names in the game were spot on: "Mawishigeri Utofumi Geri" (I don't know if that's spelt right).

Still- how about Tai Chi Quan? Has that been terribly affected by the "new age" outlook on fighting?

              Taijiquan...

It`s hard to find a quality instructor. I`d say that 90% of them are not teaching taiji that has any combat usefullness (Some would argue that the other 10% don`t teach anything useful either). Most of the instructors from the PRC are teaching competition Taiji (i.e. forms competition) with a bit of qigong thrown in for health. Just because they teach push-hands doesn`t make it combat-oriented.

That said, there are some people out there doing serious taiji - Earle Montague is one of them. He`s got a couple of books out, Power T`ai Chi was the one my instructor recommended all those years ago. Montague was a former pro-wrestler who looked like the antithesis of the typical caucasian newagey taiji exponant.

I personally don`t look to taijiquan as a source for life-and-death self-defense skills though.

Drunken Arts are frequently misused by inexperienced people or average idiots. I support Zui Quan and it's offspring, only if it is utilized properly. You all make very good points, both negative and possitive. Coming from someone who uses this art in combination with many others, I can tell you it is practically useless if you don't use your brain. Put Jackie Chan movies and what not aside. Look at your ordinary practicioner. They suck. They look like a doofus. Take a look at a master of the arts, they are "almost" unbeatable in unarmed combat (from my observation)

My point is, yes, using this form will get you knocked silly. It has happened to me on many occasions. That being said, as one's experience in battle grows you become more hasty about your desicions, and you rely less on the boundries of technical forms, and act highly upon instinct. This is true from Musashi to your average street fighter.

In hopes I dont bore you, I will try to make a few more points quickly.

Dunken Styles are to be learned while sober, practiced while drunk (in my opinion) new age teachers enforce that alcohol is a poison, and it will harm you in the end. Drunken Arts are Self-Destructive Self-Defense arts. You sacrifice many obviously sacrificed things, to gain unseen advantages.

Knowledge in other forms of Kung Fu is almost nessicary.

Also please note, that to be a succesful practicioner of drunken forms, you must have a high threshhold for pain, sober or not.

Sorry I posted such a big reply.

Anyone interested in learning some drunken techniques, feel free to contact me. I am highly skilled, but not certified. Screw certification, I know who I am.

Also, this style is deadly and has a barage of offensive and defensive moves. Proper utilization is key! These guys know what they are talking about. It really is better left alone, unless that is you have what it takes, and are not pressed for time.

I take it the drunken arts are well known in West Va and the Appalachian...

HAHAHA, well, I do make my own wine.
Not so much drunken arts that are popular around here as it is just being drunk. There is nothing to do. I am not an alchoholic though. I enjoy the simple things in life these days.

I have been known to paint and play the piano while drunk if that counts as a drunken art.

drunken Gung fu is not practised drunk, the idea is to confuse your opponent with the swaying movements and lead them into false sense of security that you are vunerable because you are drunk. Then when you are attacked you have advantage of suprise and unusual striking angles.

Drinking wine makes you act drunk better, ups your threshold of pain, increases speed, and is more fun then fighting sober.

I am a well trained practicioned or this style and where as I am not going to say you are wrong, I will say that I know what I am talking about and I do not need someone else to tell me what it is about.

The style works sober or not ,but drinking helps.

Again, it is not for everyone.
