Why did I spend so much time learning Aikido? I was good at it for one. Another reason is that I was competing in tournaments alot so I was training in other styles and Aikido at the same time. I did not come out with nothing though because when I was done I was 2nd black. For most of the last couple years I was teaching the beginers class as well so that helped to keep me interested in it. At the time I really did not feel like leaving the class and starting over at white belt somewhere else.

coming from the guy whose goal in life is to study Krav Maga, what are you going to do for the rest of the afternoon, you should be qualified to teach by lunch time!!
In any case, the certification process itself is freaking brutal. 6 consecutive days, 8 hrs a day. No joke at all.

Hmmmm...another post with female aikidoka beating Muay Thai. Why does that sound familiar? Not to mention certain consistancies in style and rhetoric, but inconcsistancies in information...
Is this the work of our used car dealer secretary friend??Last edited by Tom Yum; 06-20-2003, 10:43 AM.

I was somewhat impressed with Aikido when I studied it in the Philippines, less impressed with the class here. Different types of Aikido for sure, but I still took things from the art that could be effective. Same with Muay Thai or any of the other arts I've studied. Could an Aikidoist take out a Muay Thai stylist? A million variables obviously, but both being equally trained, my OPINION is that the MT guy would probably win.

I was not saying that Aikido or any other art is better than MT. If you read myearlier post you would see that I said I think no art is the best and that is why I try to train in several different ones. I just said there was a guy in our class that has been doing MT for a long time and I beat him consistently. Just cuz one person that does Aikido beats one person that does MT does not mean Aikido is better than MT unless there is only one person in each art.

Yea well I wasn't trying to come off like I was saying that Aikido was the best and I can beat anyone. I take BJJ now and I get tapped all the time, but that is part of the learning process. I don't think there is a really good all round art out there though cuz if you look at it some are awesome for punching and kicking, some are awesome for takedowns, some are awesome for fighting standing, some are awesome for fighting on the ground. That is why I try and train in a little bit of everything.
And I am not knocking MT by any means as a matter of fact me and the MT guy in my BJJ class have been trading, he trains me in the ways to do things in MT and I show him some Aikido.

Do you mean that you took aikido to help you in tournaments?
I see, it wasn't a waste of time because you got a nice black belt.
I do muay thai, why didn't you just take a look at my profile?

I don't care what you think I am proud of being a black belt in Aikido. It's not like Tae Kwon Do where you can walk in and pay your dues every month and have a black belt in 2yrs. regardless of skill.....I had to work hard for it and I am proud of it so don't knock me just cuz you don't have one.

If I really wanted a blackbelt I would go to my local martial arts shop and buy one. I don't care what colored belts you have or your little theory about all arts being equal. And why did you just bash TKD? I thought all arts had something good in them. You really should have a look at the 24 fighting chickens shotokan page, it tells you why sometimes people spend years doing martial arts without really knowing why, somehow I think you might find it relevant. search for www. 24fightingchickens / shotokan 101
