  • BJJ and other grappling MA weakness...

I sparred with my cousin lately and it looks like he found a way to beat Wrestlers and Bjj.... Ok so we start off in basic fighting stances. I do a low kick to make him back up. Then as soon as he backed up, i shot for the legs. Here comes my downfall. After two steps, he put his hands to my shoulders to push me back, and began kneeing me in the stomach, Ouch!

My expression sorta looked like this after the second knee to my stomach

As i Thai Boxer i would say you were shooting from too far away.

I have learnt this technique against grapplers in my thai boxing class but we used the outer blade side of the forearms on the shoulders to stop them, then its knee to the head, not stomach.

From a MT point of view you need to get me to make my hands go up not down so i would suggest some head punches get a bit closer as you will have to to punch and then shoot. thats harder because we cant get down quickly enough to jam you.

I dont know though so try it?

The reason i shot the low kcik was for some distance, if i shoot too close i get knee'ed in the face, damn, lose lose situation

Well you need to learn to fight standing just as i need to learn to fight on the ground.

You will find it hard to take this guy down just as he will lose when you get him there.

My idea would be to be good at stand up too. Then you could win either way
I think its best to win standing up and if your finding it tough going take them to the ground or if it just goes that way then you have nothing to worry about.

not much of a puncher, i don't pucnh unless i've mounted someone and need to open up a submission. I could throw some D@mn good kicks though. Maybe i'll stay up longer when i fight someone else, last time I threw a kcik at my cousin he had a black bruise that stayed for 2 months

Yes thats good if you are a good kicker but i would say learn to punch, its very useful , add that to you kicking and you will do very well.
Punching is useful because you can get a bit closer but still attack
You have long range with kicking and the floor.

As you stated you find it hrd to get a take down.
Take downs occur in medium to short range.

You dont know how to deal with this range too well.

              This is punching range.

              Conclusion. Learn to punch well.

I think it will solve alot of problems. It MT we start with kicking move into punch and knee range and then stand up grappling if you want to. you cant easily go from kicking to a vertical grapple, which is what you are trying to do.
              Hope this helps

Not really, its the hardest part of MT really.

It takes experience, the techniques are easy but there is alot of them and its something that needs alot of experience, besides you have to cross that punching range to get there first.

Look at it this way, why go to the ground if you can knock the guy out with a punch. If you cant knock him out with a punch. Take him to the ground.

Hey, theres no excuses, the best techniques bar none are punching and grappling not kicking.

Get yourself down a boxing gym.

You will be in for a rude awakening, just as i will when i get down the BJJ dojo, when i get around to it

Yes, shoot yourself and then you wont have to fight,
personally i prefer tanks. other people have guns. Tanks vs guns
                            umm tanks win.
