Second those who do compete don't go full power with only the hands.Fighters always go hard with all strikes whether shin kicks, knees or punches and in countries where the elbow is allowed it is done full contact too just as done in Thailand. These are the reasons why very few Thai fighters make it past their 30's for competeing and many get hurt.

"...many people have this notion that Thai sparring is done full power, it is not "

Do me a favour and please know what the hell you are talking about before describing Muay Thai to others.

"What makes you think Muay Thai sparring is not done full contact? I got news for you bud you are wrong.Muay Thai is known to use full power for a reason."

In Muay Thai we do go full power and go right through with our punches.Unlike most arts we don't pull back or snap our kicks and punches we go right through with our techniques.

The goal of a Muay Thai fighter is to end a fight as fast as possible with powerfull strikes and often to go for knockout.

Muay Thai fighters like to destroy an opponent they find hard to beat by causing pain to their opponents thighs, shins and knees in order to take person off balance and to put an end to their opponent fighting back for this reason we win 9 out of 10 fights.

"Muay Thai is only usefull so long as you are physically strong as Muay Thai depends on strength as well as technique"

    This simply is not so.

It is true that Muay Thai depends on technique however strength has little to do with it although it does help. One cannot help to notice that compared to many other martial arts Muay Thai fighters often appear to be very thin or skinny so obviously rely on power.

We rely alot on speed and power. Like other arts we believe with speed comes power .

Muay Thai is all about technique, speed, and hitting hard but with full power not strength. No doubt does strength help of course.

I agree with every thing else you say about Muay Thai though.

Muay Thai fighter, You have never professionally trained at a Muay Thai camp which in my opinion is the real deal so how the hell can you tell me they dont spar 50%

Muay Thai fighter your knowledge of Muay thai is quite blurred, honestly, take your know it all butt over to Thailand and impose your ideas of "training" on them and we'll see what they tell you.

1st thing is, you do not spar heavy in Thai style sparring, why? Because in Thailand one usually has a busy fight schedule so what if you get a fucking injury in sparring? eh? you cant exactly perform well can you so then you spar lightly but quickly. Boxing with the hands in the 3 camps that I trained was always done heavy.

Muay Thai is only effective so long as you are physically strong enough to apply the techniques, once you become a weak individual then Muay Thai has lost its power.

Honestly Muay Thai fighter I strongly agree with Damien, get your ass over to Thailand and find out for your self, you will be very surprised.

before making assupmtions of how it is done in Muay Thai training first experience the real deal.

    I wrote this :

"some camps like to see how the heart of a new student is by pairing him off with someone and letting them go full power but only with the hands... "

Muay Thai fighter have you ever been to an asian country? do you even realise that they have different ways of doing things than we do, for one they havnt got the fear of being sued if they stick a guy into a ring when he really doesnt want to be there to fight!

I have seen 13 year old boys being whipped with a cane because he kicked wrong, I have seen a young lad, who is now in prison and also ex-champion of Lumpinee, being violently kicked to the legs as punishment for doing something wrong! I was put into a ring with a champion of Norther n Thailand and told to box! hard and fast to see the heart I have.... sometimes they would even take you to local shows and have you fight someone to see your heart, 3 months training and they expect you to get in the ring.

Do you think I just made this all up? what do you think I am just sayiong this for a laugh?

    you said this :

"Do me a favour and please know what the hell you are talking about before describing Muay Thai to others."

Muay Thai fighter, I think what you have is a crap teacher, and you are full of gung ho and would not last long in Thailand, I know and love Muay Thai, I accept that Thai style sparring is done softly, full fucking stop MTF wether you agree or not it is done softly!

I would sugest you stop going to you kickboxing classes and try to find a real Muay Thai gym.

Thats all I can say, say what you want MTF it doesnt really matter, what does matter is I have experienced the true style of Muay Thai and will again very soon and by that time you will be very much at the back of my memory but your all knowing of Muay Thai shall surely shine in this forum to disalusion newcomers into thinking it is something it is not.

good luck mate cos it looks like you'll need it

damn look what i found, maybe your gym in Canada would lkike to argue with the Thai trainers in this camp which happens to be in Thailand!

I actually think you have been highly mislead! or you rteacher is either a gunh ho mad man and your gym trains in some Muay Thai techniques but not Muay Thai spirit as your attitude makes me feel ashamed to have a guy like you training in Muay Thai.

Now if you happen to lighten the **** up and stop spreading utter bullshit and actually go learn something other than gung ho bullshit then respect will be given to you, until then MTF you are an embarrassment....

....only 6 weeks MTF then you are very much at the backof my memory.

This forum seems to have a few experienced fighters lurking around, unlike most of them, MTF really take a trip to Thailand, and I would say if you plan a year in your head without actually experiencing 1 fucking week then you are asking way too much. A high percentage of people cannot keep up to the training, many pay for it and lay around all day but the ones who do train find it tough and very demanding so dont be thinking you will last a year, I hope you do, but you wont be sparring heavy if you compete there .... also remember your gung ho attitude has no place there so leave that behind.

Hello Mr. Muay Thai Fighter. You are obviously very opinionated and sure of your ideas. That's fine, a fighter should be self confident. I only have one question for you. What is your record in the ring (wins, losses, draws, and KO's)? Here's to keeping it real bro.

He currently runs on a 0 - 0 - 0 record, but is hoping to add the odd loss every now and then.

Hey I just got a flash of brilliance. We could pair up MTF with Brittney Spears...same weight, same ring record..yeah...yeah...naw, wait...that won't work either. People would start to accuse Brittney of trying to pad her record.

Yes I have been to Asia(Thailand and Sri Lanka)I'm half asian myself. I do realize their way of training is different infact I know they train harder then the western world because for most of them that is their life.

"Do you think I just made this all up? what do you think I am just sayiong this for a laugh?I was put into a ring with a champion of Norther n Thailand and told to box! hard and fast to see the heart I have.... sometimes they would even take you to local shows and have you fight someone to see your heart, 3 months training and they expect you to get in the ring."

No I don't think you are making this up or doing this for laughs.
In our fights we also box hard but we also kick very hard and we train that way as well. Our school goes to fights every 3 to 6 months.

"Muay Thai fighter, I think what you have is a crap teacher, and you are full of gung ho and would not last long in Thailand, I know and love Muay Thai, I accept that Thai style sparring is done softly, full fucking stop MTF wether you agree or not it is done softly!"

First of all I don't have a crap teacher for your information he is number 1 champion of the world at the moment.I have also seen him fight in UFC (I think it was UFC XXlV)and knocked his opponent out with a knee to his opponents jaw.My instructor also has a Jujitsu Championship and has been in movies like "Rumble in the Bronx"with Jackie Chan. He's not one of those lame instructors who claim to be some champion and aren't able to prove it to their own students.

In our school Thai style is done full contact.Sometimes it might be done lightly but other times it won't be that's why we wear 16 ounce gloves instead of your usual karate type sparring gear.

"I would sugest you stop going to your kickboxing classes and try to find a real Muay Thai gym."

How can you suggest I stop training in my school and find another when you have no clue about my school and instructor ?

If they spar only 50% are you telling me real Thai fighting is about points just like in karate, because if you are that's bullshit.

Muay Thai and karate sparring are completely different,Muay Thai is full contact and karate isn't in most cases.Karate has point and continous sparring , Muay Thai has full contact only.

              checkout my school website:

What the **** would you know about my record ?

I'm second in B.C and traing to work myself up further.

As soon as I'm off these damn crutches I'll be training harder then ever and no I didn't get sprained ankle from training.

I haven't been mislead at all.My teacher is far from being a gun ho mad man and we do have Thai spirit.

My teacher is well known around the world by most martial artists due to his championships in Jujitsu,Muay Thai, and Shooto fights as well as for fighting in UFC.

As far as spirit we probably have more then any other school or most schools around that teach Muay Thai in our part of the world. We fight from the heart and fight with confidence and we train very hard.

"A high percentage of people cannot keep up to the training, many pay for it and lay around all day but the ones who do train find it tough and very demanding so dont be thinking you will last a year, I hope you do, but you wont be sparring heavy if you compete there ...."

If I train hard and used to sparring full contact and they spar light why would I have to worry it makes no sense.Sparring full contact is alot more dangerous then light contact. So what makes you think I wouldn't last if everything about the Thai training in Thailand is true ?

I guess its different strokes for different folks....

I have trained under a number of Thai instructors. My current coach is Ajarn Bumrung Prawatsrichai (Master Danny) who is a former Lumpinee and Radjadamnern Stadium champ with over 300 fights (over 200 were Muay Thai fights).

He INSISTS that sparring be LIGHT!!!! but FAST!!!! Speed only!!! No power! You use full contact sparring when using your hands only, and even then he insists that we wear 18oz (or larger!) gloves.

I have YET to meet a Thai trainer (as in someone born, raised, and having fought in Thailand) who will allow full contact sparring. As a matter of fact, you are PUNISHED if you go too hard in sparring!!!! I have seen many of our fighters be assigned hundreds of pushups and situps for going to hard in a sparring session.

Mind you, I have not been to Thailand myself, but I have trained directly under Thai coaches, or the assistants of Thai coaches, for the last 12 years...

                        My personal coaches:
                        Ajarn Kumron Vaitayanonta
                        Ajarn Bumrung Prawatsrichai
                        Kru Tong Trithara

Coaches whose instructors or students I've worked with:
                        Ajarn Kham Philavahn
                        Ajarn Surichai Sirisute
                        Ajarn Vut Kamnark
                        Ajarn Sken

*oh heck, you guys get the idea.

Basically, I've had the opporutnity to train directly or indirectly under a number of different Thai coaches. I have YET to run across any who advocate full contact sparring unless only using your hands.

But being as the above doesn't even amount to a drop in the bucket as far as the sheer number of Thai trainers in the world, its quite likely that I have just simply not run across one yet that advocates full contact sparring.

Again, to each their own. I'll continue doing things our way...

That's what I've been told as well go relatively light ~60-70% contact with full speed.
