Short Thai clip on traditional magical tattoos. I don't know about the cuts, I heard that some people could fake them but it does seem real on the video. Interesting footage:
Thanks for the clip, it's amazing how absorbed in yourself you are during the tattoo making process. I could see that happening in the video. When I got mine (not a traditional one) on my back I realized the best thing to do was to concentrate on your breathing and let the pain flow.
I can only imagine how much deeper the experience must be if monks or an ajarn do that.
Yeah, I want to do it but I know the traditional way is a bit painful. Also the needles dont seem clean they use, anyone ever contact hepatitis from any traditional tattooing in thailand? I will get all my shots updated before i return but it was just something on my mind because i saw it done once.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

Nice link, thank you for that.
Phra Ajarn Gamtawn's work is very interesting with the ancient Lanna scripts.
Interestingly, some designs look very much like the grids used to practice footwork and movements in Lanna.
I came across another site that mentions Phra Ajarn Gamtorn in Chiang Mai. The site also covers Hanuman and Ling Lom Sak Yant designs popular with Muay Thai fighters. Sak Yant - Chiang Mai | Thai Guide To Thailand
i want to get a traditional one now. i have plenty of non-traditional ink but it seems like one of those would be more meaningful. i never really found getting tattooed to be painful. i have gotten them in some of the supposed worst spots (rib cage, back, chest, under arm) and i never thought that they hurt. i guess people have different tolerances for different things though. but i am guessing the traditional way would be more painful since the needle is controlled by a person and not the machine. either way i want to get one done.
george i would imagine that they would sterilize the equipment somehow. with tatooing needles hepatitis isn't the only thing you would need to worry about considering the needle comes in contact with the persons blood. i can't believe this would be completely overlooked.
People tell me that a traditional tattoo is only slightly more painful than a machine tattoo. One Monk I know who does Sak Yant sterilizes the needles in Alcohol. Not the best but certainly better than nothing. Then you have to think about the ink. Is the inkwell thrown away after use or used again. This same Monk claims he has never heard of anyone getting any infection from his tattooing and states that Sak Yant is all about protection so no harm will come to you. You must be a believer!
