Even standing you could use that kind of control to keep him in between you and someone else.

I made the mistake of thinking I could take the rear naked choke, bend him backwards to take his balance but remain standing. If that had worked, I would have been in a good position - obviously it failed and he pulled me down. I underestimated him, simply speaking.

Recently, I have started working with a judo/JJJ trainer. I'm hoping to practice a lot of standing clinch and joint-locking/control technique that I've not been much exposed to. I mean, I've been shown wrist locks and such, but I've not really trained it.
To be honest, I have good striking and good sub-grappling, but not a whole lot in between.

The choke always works best if you collapse the back of his knee with your foot. Then the advantage is yours to do with him what you want and still have the ability to fight someone else.

It also occurs to me that taking a cross wrist is an option even if the other fella is considerably taller than you, but the rnc from a standing position...

            Hindsight is a beautiful thing.

After reading your post I too thought collapsing the knee, while grabbing the back of your opponents collar and applying a simple behind the back type arm/wrist lock, and then throwing him to the ground would have be a viable option. But then you responded according to how you read the situation at the time and it worked out fine in the end. Obviously restriaining techniques were necessary in that situation and you lacked training in them despite you MMA background......How did you feel your MMA training held up in that scenario?? I'm not a critic of MMA by the way.
Your RNC would have been sweet had you got it locked in despite what ever he was saying about getting you out of it (if you've trained it properly he would be sleepy sleepy time). Good on you for giving Judo and JJJ ago and recognizing a "hole" in your training. Escorting and restraint techniques are essential for situations where you need to control someone before it escalates into something more violent.

But hey, every situation is different and I think you did a good job in the end. A good experience for you and a good one for us to read about, thanks for posting.

Strength and natural ability will carry you a long way but martial arts training will help you fight with impunity.

Yep it's F.O. and yep we had this convo before. I hate to say it but our Army brawls were due to too much booze, too little woman, sometimes too much weed and not enough sensitivity training. Sort of a Demographic problem.

Yep, I feel confident to hear that our soldiers that have the job of protecting our country, drink lots of booze , are high on weed, constantly horny, and have no sensitivity , booze+ weed+ sexually frusturated+slightly psychopathic = a crazy soldier with a gun

(good things are bound to happen)

well, theres nothing wrong with weed or getting high. it is well known that marijuana is good for you. it makes you smarter, stronger, prevents cancer, and also lets you achieve stronger, bigger, longer lasting erections as well. so there is nothing wrong with getting high off weed.

Look, if you smoke weed that's your business. But if you can keep your willie up for longer than 3-hours, then you don't need it.
