This thread has become more of a roller coaster ride....
Polegirl, what is your opinion on women training in martial arts and the appropriate level of fight contact?
For me, it boils down to the individual. If she is new, then I work pure defense on my part and gauge her power. If she's been training for a year or more, I might go light and quick, but remain on defense mode for the most part.
If she's an expereinced amateur, I've got to train just as if she's one of the guys because women can develop great body mechanics and power with time.Comment

I totally agree with you Tom. When I did my first class I found it very intimidating. As women we are taught to be "nice" and martial arts goes totally against that. As such not to turn someone off (especially in something like BJJ) it is important to go easy (but not so that they have no challenge) and make the person feel comfortable, not go all out. If I went to my first class and got completely hammered I would not have gone back. It is the same with any new partner, you need to find out what they are capable of and train in a safe manner. I have found that most guys tend to try and guage where I am coming from and my strength and ability and then go from there.Comment

Never Not Hit When Sparring
I have a funny story on this subject that happened my recently. I had to spar with a woman that is maybe, mid-late thirties, maybe, 120-130 pounds,looked skinny, I lightly jabbed at her mid-section (Body Shots only) so i only had about two inches to hit besides her ribs. I think she took the light jabs as an insult because every shot I threw she caight me with combo's to my Mid-section, soooooo... don't go easy on them if thier experienced.Comment
