Let's put it this way guys. if you practice disarms yes it's not the safest or best position to be in we have all agreed on this already.

However if you do practice disarms and you are in a situation where it would be viable and necessary than you have that tool..

Does anyone else find it odd that some of the same people who become absolutely hysterical over the idea of using any shot, throw, or strike that they don't 'approve' of (the word 'suicide' comes up quite a lot in fact) under any circumstances on 'da street' have got their hackles up over the suggestion that empty-handed approaches to someone with a gun trying to kill you is not a great bet?

I seem to recall someone saying "circumstances dictate the best course of action" about a million times here.

However if you do practice disarms and you are in a situation where it would be viable and necessary than you have that tool.

Also even if you don't get the disarm a lot of FMA disarm techniques will at least take the weapon offline from you and give you a second to respond to the attack.

If your trying to grab the weapon or the arm your crazy. The disarms I have learned seem to involve more of a jarring attack to the limb that has the weapon.

A gun only has only one point of attack so you may be able to half as it and grab the person, a knife is a whole nother story.

Lets face it, we all know you can't learn to properly defend yourself from something if you don't understand it. Weapon RETENTION is based upon defending yourself against weapon disarms.
I'd like to know how the hell you practice weapon retention if you don't practice weapon disarms.

Or if you could be locked in a padded room with mirrors all around you so you could annoy yourself for a long time and come to eventually see yourself for what you are. How much would you bet that this big mouth has never disarmed a gunman who was actually trying to kill him? Or his teacher, or his teacher's teacher...

Thanks Tom. The thing I get from "gun disarms are lame" is: "I don't own a gun" or even worse: "I have a gun, but I don't practice weapon retention, drawing under stress, etc because that stuffs lame", or "I live in the UK and guns are illegal".

Either way these are the last people you want SD/weapon opinions/advice from, but somehow they're usually the first ones to make sweeping statements on the subject.

You keep tossing this out, so I went back and looked, it seems perhaps it isn't my ability to read as your ability to communicate an intelligent point thats in question.

9 mm beats an eye gouge every last time.

However, I still think the kung fu disarms are flat out lame.

So you see since you singled out KF disarms one would naturally be left with the impression that you were singling out the one style you went out of your way to name.

I don't practice gun disarms... why would I practice something I thought was lame?

If they're smart and don't present the weapon before firing within the 21 feet distance or they shoot you outside it (less than 20% of shootings are outside 20 feet) then you're probably going to die. That leaves 80% of shootings inside the range a knife wielding attacker can defeat a gun. Well, the knife doesn't get there by itself, if the knife can get there that fast so can you.

You practice Silat so I'm sure you know as well as anyone who takes the time to learn, the best disarms are incidental or "hidden technique". The disarms are the "bandaid" of the technique. You attempt to evade by closing in explosively and slamming the weapon offline as you bounce into the opponent, sometimes you wind up with their arm sliding through your hands, well just before they free the hand and get on line to shoot you, there are weapon strips (disarms).

But remember kiddies Sagacious Lu says "its lame to practice the last line of defense before actually getting shot" So remember, DON"T grab the gun or gun hand, and don't practice what to do if you happen to find yourself holding the barrel in a struggle.

I feel bad for LEO's that get shot in the line of duty but especially for the one in five killed by his/her own weapon.

Wish they had better training for those EXTREME events... Even the "pro's" can lose their weapon to untrained attackers...

Indeed, officers have their weapons taken from their hands and holsters (being disarmed) so often that weapons are built and marketed with a safety feature that won't allow the weapon to fire if the officer drops the magazine when someone tries to disarm him. Some LEO Depts go so far as to require their officers to use weapons with this feature.
