• The Hands

For the wrestlers out there, what do you do about hand-fighting?

Some folks like to keep their hands free to throw a hand into the face to set up a takedown or to headsnap or something and others like to tie up the opponent's hands to establish a reaction from which they can initiate offense. Of course, if you are looking to throw, shoot from a tie-up then you will have yet another approach.

    What's your preference?

And for the non-wrestling crowd, what do you think and how had what you study informed that approach?

I used to keep my hands around my knees, my forearms lightly above my kneecap. I don't like to use head tapping or light distractions and tended to wait for openings or to find them through wrapping up. I wanted to appear as complacent and nonchalant in stance as the situation would allow me to without exposing my legs. With my arms down there like I was holding myself up, I had quick underhooks if I needed them. I had to be careful about getting them caught, but I'd have to be slow in the first place to be penetrated from nowhere.

I tended to approach standing like an explosive, picky predator. I used controlled violence to break away from any situation I didn't like. Sometimes I did use my hands to reach toward a leg, sort of like a fast, lazy shoot, hoping I could tease a hasty sprawl from someone.

I like to keep T-Rex hands and get really close (clinching range) with them without actually clinching up. Once I get close they usually start trying to collar-and-elbow tying with me and I'll just keep shucking those off while staying in range, then when I feel the time is right that's when I do the duck unders to their clinch attempt to the trusty double.

We work hand fighting while unattached, handfighting in the pummel, and the pummel without handfighting, too.

Some guys will keep their hands busy, busy as a distraction and to get the opponent to focus on them as a set up to a shot.

Others really want to get that wrist control and move in from there.

Others leave an arm hanging out there to be grabbed to counter off of that.

            Good thread, jubaji.

For some unknow reason people on the Judo forum don't like to talk about "grip fight". In some CMA forum people don't know (or don't care) much about "grip fight".

In Chinese wrestling, you will move both arms as inward circles (this way you can always intersect your opponent's arms) and try to grab your right hand on your opponent's left wrist, and your left hand on his right wrist. If you can get both of his wrists, you "tuck" one of his arms under his other arm (use one of his arms to jam his other arm) and free one of your hand to execute your attack. You can also raise one of his arms up and another of his arms down (redirect his arms) to expose his body and move in. If you redirect both of his arm up, you can move in for a head lock. If you redirect his arms down, you can move in for a bear hug. If you don't want to grab his arms and you just want to touch his forearms (build bridge), you can always use arm wrap, under hook, over hook, waist surround, head lock, reverse head lock to enter.

You are not just a CMA hater. You do know some "grip fight" principles.

I love to let my opponent to grab my arm (on the wrist). I can just drop my elbow right into his chest and then enter (not sure this move is legal in sport?).

If you can't handfight, you really can't wrestle, hand control is a HUGE facet of any style of wrestling. Wrestling is the opposite of striking, if you can't control his hands, he's going to hit you, eyegogue you, headlock you, etc... Wrestling for fighting has a formula. Close distance, control his striking weapons (hand fighting is a big part of this), put them on their ass/head/belly/face/back, and proceed to establish dominance (up to you how to end it depending on preference/options).

Handfighting, specifically hand control, is essential to good grappling as a whole. You won't be able to FIGHT with your grappling if you don't have a polished working knowledge of handfighting. You will get pummeled.

Someone I know well can deploy his folder and stab you three or ten times in a couple seconds... never want to say "OOPS, I should have had control of his hand"...
