Guys,
Just wanted to pick up on a specific theme that kept cropping up in the other thread, without dragging that whole discussion on.
The topic I wanted to throw out there is that of facing drunk opponents. I was kind of getting the impression that people for some reason think this is a walk in the park? In my experience, the benefits of someone being drunk (i.e. lack of co-ordination, balance, timing, accuracy) can very often be outweighed by what it does to make them a harder opponent.
Most of what goes on in a real fight is to do with how determined and aggressive your opponent is, and how hard it is to back them down. In my experience, alcohol can often be your worst enemy, as opposed to an ally, when someone has consumed too much of it. First of all, it fills them with a sense of courage and determination that means they want to fight when, 99% of the time sober, they never would. Secondly, it makes them so much more aggressive, and it totally blurs their sense of moral judgement, to the point where they will do (and I have seen them do) horrific things. Finally, consumed in large amounts, it partly anaethetises people to pain, which can make them so much harder to stop.
So I guess what I'm saying is, its not black and white, and its definitely not an easy gig. Sure, on student night when some 19 year old book worm has downed too many ciders, its not a big problem. However, get a Rugby player in front of you who has had 10 pints of lager and has decided that he wants to tear your head off....its no picnic let me assure you.
I would be interested to hear (most) other people's experiences...
