No, it's not reaching. It's a continuing effort to keep you on target. I have said it dozens of times. We went into Iraq (in my own, humble opinion) to:


1. Get rid of Saddam

Saddams gone, we aint...BTW why did we replace him? none of his weapons could reach us...he wasnt dealing with terrorists before we bombed him...he was dealing with Bush sr and the CIA.

2. Establish a Democratic Arab Nation that would be cooperative and sympathetic to US interests in the region - sympathetic enough to help us apply political pressure to the more radical nations in the area and prevent us from having to use military action against everyone in the world

...i thought we established his puppet govt so we could keep an eye on IRAN and invade them or syria...so are we preping for war by invading or not?

3. Protect US interests in the region - including oil

i asked you how having terrorist with WMD "god knows where" is better than saddam having them where he couldnt reach us...

4. Establish a larger and more effective military and intelligence presence along the borders of Iran and Syria to allow the US better intelligence gathering capabilities (to prevent future attacks by terrorist groups in the region) and better response options in the event that Syria or Iran resort to actions that would involve the whole world.

so this is another premtive military operation....i thought we we were trying not to start a war on everyone..which is it?

5. Act as a buffer of sorts for middle eastern terrorist organizations by forcing them to spend time, energy, money, and resources on attacks in the middle east instead of on American soil. As their operational cycle shortens, our opportunity to capture and kill them increases. The more money they spend on fighting soldiers in Iraq, the less money they'll have to fund attacks over here. The more often they poke their heads up over there, the more chances we have to capture and interrogate them, or just blow those aforementioned heads into the halls of Allah.

Create a fire that the muslim extremists will burn themselves out on huh?...glad we chose to do that somewhere else....good american thinking...why didnt we let them run support their buddies in afghanistan instead?...instead we create a new problem? thats forward thinking i mean really werent the guys behind 911 based in afghanistan? isnt that where their leader is? wouldnt that be the place to send all these troops?

It's not that I'm changing what I've said, it's that all of these are reasons why I think the war is justified. All of them are important, and while any one of them would have been enough for me, I think that the fact that all of these ends are served by doing what we're doing makes it all the more justifiable. I don't think all of these aims would have been met by invading Iran or Syria, but they were met by invading Iraq. You don't have to agree, but don't try to make it sound like I've changed my reasoning.

Boar - I didn't say we went into Iraq to defend Israel, but I have said time and time again that our presence on both sides of Iran, and along the southern border of Syria gives us much better intelligence resources and capabilities to monitor such activities. Do you not think that's an accurate statement? Are you saying our ability to determine what's going on in Iran would be better off without troops in Iraq? Would you rather we rely on full-scale war with Iran than preventive intelligence? Do you not think that our ability to react from within the region, allied with Israel, Jordan, and the newly formed Iraqi governments maybe acts as a sort of deterrent?

Israel Warns of Iran Nuke Capability in Three Years




Israel warned yesterday that Iran could resume uranium enrichment by March and have a nuclear weapons capability within three years, Reuters reported (see GSN, Dec. 9).

Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz provided the assessment in a closed-door briefing for an Israeli parliamentary committee, according to Reuters.

“If the Iranians continue now then they will be able to begin enriching uranium at the start of March,” Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuval Steinitz quoted Halutz as saying.

“It would take two to three years” for Iran to produce a nuclear bomb, Halutz told the officials (Megan Goldin, Reuters, Dec. 13).

Meanwhile, in a new barrage of anti-Israel rhetoric, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today for the first time publicly denied the Holocaust, calling it a “myth,” the Associated Press reported.

Ahmadinejad said that if the West believed the Holocaust happened, “then give a part of your own land in Europe, the United States, Canada or Alaska to them so that the Jews can establish their country.”

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Berlin had summoned the Iranian charge d’affaires to make its protest “unmistakably clear.”

“I cannot hide the fact that this weighs on bilateral relations and on the chances for the negotiation process, the so-called nuclear dossier,” Steinmeier said. France, Germany and the United Kingdom have been preparing for renewed talks with Tehran.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said Ahmadinejad’s remarks demonstrate “the mind-set of the ruling clique in Tehran and indicate clearly the extremist policy goals of the regime.”

“The combination of fanatical ideology, a warped sense of reality and nuclear weapons is a combination that no one in the international community can accept,” Regev said.

Even some Iranian conservatives have criticized Ahmadinejad’s rhetoric as damaging to Iran’s international image, according to AP. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, however, has supported Ahmadinejad’s calls for Israel’s destruction (Ali Akbar Dareini, Associated Press/Washington Post, Dec. 14).

Israel has the means to defend itself and will not allow a second Holocaust, a spokesman for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said today.

“Thank God, Israel has the means at its disposal to bring about the downfall of this extremist regime in Iran. There will be no second ‘final solution,’” Raanan Gissin told Agence France-Presse.

“We hope that these extremist declarations will make the world wake up to the nature of this regime — especially the fact that Iran’s nuclear program and its support of international terrorism, represents not only a danger for Israel but for the entire Western civilization,” Gissin said (Agence France-Presse/SpaceWar.com, Dec. 14).

Elsewhere, a senior Iranian official for the first time yesterday praised a Russian proposal to transfer Iran’s sensitive nuclear work to Russia, AFP reported.

“We salute all initiatives seeking to create an atmosphere of confidence, if Iran’s rights to peaceful nuclear activities are recognized,” said Gholam Ali Haddad Adel, the speaker of Iran’s parliament.

However, “during my visit, the question of uranium enrichment in Russia was not mentioned concretely,” said Adel, traveling in Moscow (Agence France-Presse/Khaleei Times, Dec. 14).

Ahmadinejad also criticized the United States for refusing to sell spare parts for civilian aircraft to Iran, AP reported.

Iranian officials have blamed a series of airline accidents on Washington, which maintains a general embargo on the country.

“No country is authorized to impose spare-part sanctions against another country. Nothing can justify this,” Ahmadinejad said.

He said the issue was at the heart of Iran’s distrust of Western promises to provide nuclear fuel, AP reported (Dareini, Associated Press, Dec. 14).

Ahmadinejad also vowed today not to compromise “one iota” on the nuclear dispute, AFP reported.

“We have experienced your attitude and we will no longer be duped by your lying propaganda,” he said (Agence France-Presse, Dec. 14).

In my opinion, the UN us an outdated machine that we don't need anymore. Report: Intelligence assessment says Iraq war has worsened terrorist threat

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Iraq war has contributed to an increased threat of terrorism, according to an intelligence assessment that has not lessened the Senate majority leader's defense of the U.S.-led invasion three years ago and occupation.

The classified assessment of the war's impact on terrorism came in a National Intelligence Estimate that represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government, an intelligence official said Sunday. The official, confirming accounts first published in Sunday's New York Times and Washington Post, spoke on condition of anonymity because the report is classified.

The report found that the war has helped create a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.

Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn. said he had not seen the classified report, which was completed in April, but said Americans understand the United States must continue to fight terrorists in Iraq and elsewhere.

"Either we are going to be fighting this battle, this war overseas, or it's going to be right here in this country," Frist said on ABC's This Week, echoing an argument that President Bush frequently makes.

Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., said in a statement that the assessment "should put the final nail in the coffin for President Bush's phony argument about the Iraq war."

"How many more independent reports, how many more deaths, how much deeper into civil war will Iraq need to fall for the White House to wake up and change its strategy in Iraq?"

Frist said Kennedy wants to "cut and run."

"I think — and the majority of the American people think — what it shows is that we've got to win," Frist said. "We've got to win this war on terror, wherever it is, and it's going to be fought overseas, or if we don't win there, it's going to be fought here in the United States."

As part of the overall strategy of combating terrorism, Frist also said he expects Congress to pass legislation this week that would set rules for the interrogation and trial of suspected terrorists. The president has pressured lawmakers to put it into law before adjourning for the midterm elections.

The legislation is the result of a compromise between the White House and holdout Republican senators who had disagreed over how far the U.S. should be allowed to go to get information from suspected terrorists. The bill lists acts that would constitute a war crime, including torture, rape, biological experiments and cruel and inhuman treatment.

Frist would not say whether the legislation would ban techniques that U.S. agents reportedly have used in the past, such as simulated drowning, cold cells, prolonged standing and sleep deprivation. He also said he did not know whether the bill would prevent prosecution of North Koreans, for example, if they captured Americans and simulated drowning, a technique known as "water boarding."

"I'm not going to comment on individual techniques," Frist said. "It helps the terrorists and the reason why it helps the terrorists who are going to come and try to assassinate us and people listening to us right now."
