the dact of the matter is that the elbow does start from the side no matter what ( during straitline punches and in that KF ( even yours) doesn't differ from karate during basics the hand is pulled tothe side but training should tach that it is actually the body doing the pulling
this is done because beginners tend to focus on the extremities instead of the body, by pulling the hand to be pulled to the side the body is foced to move with it
I tended to skip basics for weeks in a row ( the traditional that is) and work from a fighting posture ( rear hand near elbow of fronthand) but had to correct the body seperately, this I didn't have to do when working in a traditional way ( or any other way where I pulled the hand to the side)

Somehow I don't think this is much diffeent in Wu zu quan/Ngo cho kun

Now it Is stupid to get stuck in basics
In the Seventh-Star Praying Mantis KungFu, some of its fist attacks doesnt comes from the side instead - the fist comes from the side level (but in a nipple level)

    • My punch beat your punch 22-2, so I win you lose convinced? And I have full alphabet of 25,000 elbow and groin flick, but you only one punch and an old sock. And CMA beat you Thai Boxing with invisible elbow snot picking nose off frog, whereas your punch lose to mine 22-2.

      Convinced?

After several jumps hoping to reach/catch that grapes from a vine but it failed, ThaiBri then finally turn back and walk away from that grapevine and said "That Grapes is really sour"

darn Bri, what a lag, we passed that station many posts ago

We weren't talking effectiveness, just excecution

Watch out with the old sock, you know what Mick Foley can do with that( the ammendable claw)

You will find this in many asian style I think
for instance Kyokushin karate pull it as high as that (almost in the armpit)
            but again only in basics
It will range from the hip to the armpit depending on the particular style
I use Karate examples because that's what I know most about as far as asian striking MA goes but I do not think this is unique to japanese arts

            • last april 12,i was mugged inside a public utility vehicle by 3-4 armed robber, one had a gun all of them had bladed weapons...if kung fu is such as what most people think it is then i wont be here posting a reply. the problem is that most people in the west take on kungfu as a hobby and not a way of life...how do you expect to reap the fruits of what has been passed on for generations? there is more to kung fu than just forms...

what i am practising is basically devoid of flashy moves...only the useful stuff...but then people wont be tought how to use it properly and correctly in a given situation unless you prove ursel worthy of the knowledge. we dont just teach anyone who comes in our door to damage an person's windpipe right away..he has to prove himself worhty of it 1st...

That might be because most of us in the west have a daytimejob and nothing to fall back to

I can't figure out whether Kung Fu helped you or not with this post. Why not tell us all about it?

                  • hello thai bri :-)

well, its really a very close quarters fight, inside a crowded mini mini bus. most of the time it was my kungfu grappling that did the trick and almost always, common sense...i didnt know what i ate but i was really careless that time thinking i can beat these guys, must be the rush of the moment...these fckin weirdo's wasnt expecting someone to put up a fight so they were pretty surprised...my mental conditioning at that time was at its peak, anticipating everything.when the one beside me started grabbing my stuff inside my pocket,i followed suit almost instantly, grabbed his hair and never let go,gave hime 2 punches that never landed well bec the vehicle was moving and the headroom is basically only more than 2 meters(anyone know what a jeepney looks like?) its also cramped, people were jumping from the window and runninf from the door,it was chaotic, the 15 or so seconds seem like minutes...i was stabbed 2x in my left arm which resulted in a shallow wound good thing i was wearing heavy cotton long sleeved tshirt...i think that deflected the blow somewhat. then i received 2 punches to the nose, when i saw them coming,i faced the opposite direction and they landed on my cheeks...the fighting went to the streets and i never let go of the fckin bastard's hair(i never knew i had a pitbull in me)...his hair reminds me of fido-dido's so its really easy to grasp...then im still pummeling his face but cant seem to land a soilid shot since hes moving about and crying and im thinking about all the blood coming out and where it all came from...my face was warm from my own fluids, and aslo my chest too...it was a fckin ride,it was exciting but i dont want to go thru it again...then one of the batsaqrtds pulled out a revbolver,i stared at it for a moment thinking it might be a fake then realised its not worth the gamble,he pulled it so that i can let go of his friend,i let him go...the it was a standstill we were calculating each others movements...the gun can be captured as its only in my arms reach but i was also thinking that its too risky,i still have 2 dogs to come home to! :-) they all ran i followed but all the people running, kibitsers abd those bastards look the same at that point so i tended to my wounds 1st,sought refuge in a boot/leather shop...peole were loking at me...it was like being in a cheap action film...what was really irritating is that peope dont know what happened...the people who are inside the vehicle asked me after 'what happened'...i answered back 'dont u know?' lol...lucky them...this experience make me want to save up for a cheap car of my own...damn...sometimes poverty can realy create all sorts of bullshits...fck them!!! this is how i looked the day after,i looked wrecked! but still handsome...all the movements seem so natural almost like reflexive...and so easy to use like it was all 2nd nature...i was always yacked about everytime i practise bec i clown around always and it seems that weapons are more my thing in our club...but sometimes situations will make things come out...oh boy...

like my senior, konghan told me in the email, its not worth the gamble...but i still dont know what happened that day that i was so reckless...i wished my brain made me decide to get off the jeep but i was too busy anticipating them until it was too late...the event somewhat made me feel fulfiled hehe but i wish i can avoid it all together hehehe

                    and yes,i have a day job,sometimes i work from 9am-11pm...i am a 3d animator...underpaid one too...

                      • Pit, at least you have proven that kung fu does work. Kong Han is all about real fighting about ferocity & feircness thats why we train a lot in muscle tensioning, developing first that power punch ( but you need to find your target) I can just imagine if you had landed your punch. The next level once you have power in your punch train on arm, neck breaking. You can find them in song sui form. Very deadly & effective.

Man, you still look handsome, & nice to hear that nothing serious happened to you. Lol. Get a nice chick to massage that face up.

Me, I count my self lucky ( knock on the wood ) & its all becuase of my training, I had about 6 close encounters with thugs & muggers in the Philippines & in all except one I was able to defend & intimidate them to back off. The 4th incident I nearly stabbed one I was able to suprised him that he trip & drop his screw driver knife & the 5th I nearly shoot one. The 6th one I was, lets call it " outdrawn" it happened also in a passenger jeepney. Its a bit difficult to fight inside a jeep.

That is why for those who really want to test their martial art skills, I say go to a third world country try the Philippines it won`t take long to bump into a mugger there. The only thing is be careful, no rules watchout for backstabbers or flying " pana" ( arrows). Hit hard, hit fast Those muggers are like wild dogs don`t run the more you run the more they`ll chase you. if you can`t handle it & need to run, head for a nearest restaurant or commercial building.

                        • konghan: well,it almost always works...its really weird...i get 3-4 violent incidents happening to me annually...i dont know if its only me and my bad temper or is it the situation here in the developing countries...i heard that its the same in most parts of the us as well...whats w those people who do these things to other people? this isnt the worst that my face sufered...i got the ugliest blackeye in 1995,my eye was all red...my opponent was a looooooot taller than me i miscalculated his reach..i fell to my back...everything was soooo fast...the last thing i remember was i got hit in the eye...a solid shot...i dont know if its just the neighborhood where im in...really weird someyears earlier,me and my peers were blasted w a mini homemade granade...nothing serious apart from the mini shrapnel wounds that came along...im a pretty peaceful person,it was i who always tought hua sun's grandchildren to be patient and to run when a violent incident happen...and i tought them to streghthn their legs o that they could run fast to the police! LOL i guess its just me...the thing that struck me was how 'kim' was so easy to use in most situations...b4 i thought it was sooo difficult but this is the 2nd fight i used it,another was when i was walking home from the casino where i used to work then 2 stupid kids made the wrong gesture and racist remarks in soler st...after that they started calling me uncle...i dont shave much bec the good blades are expensive but i dont look old LOL

thai bri: hahaha i dont care about how i look afterard its just irritating how people stare at you thinking that ur a goon...and the pain the next day after,i was picking blood instead of snot for 3 days...i have a minor fracture in someparts of my nose as the xry showed but its nothing serious as the dr said...ur a law enforcer,i guess ur pretty used to these things lol

These are good arguments to promote tourism ..... maybe some ideas for new package tours for WOW Philippines? Cubao and it's cellphone snatchers, lunch with the ati-atihan gang in Ermita, Tandang Sora at night?.... And for adventurous ones wishing to discover the islands of the south and ready for a long sejourn, Basilan , a warm welcome assured by the locals and free guided tours through the forest... ?

A really tough guy, who thinks that the 100-men kumite is no more challenging, should go to Indonesia wearing a Star-Spangled-Banner shirt walking on the street. Plus you can always enjoy a show like http://www.yellowbamboo.com .

Aye. I've woken up worse for wear a few times mate. But I like to think that a great many others have regretted the day they ever saw me. Oh Yes!
