Slaps are devastating. I once took a slap in the floating rib area (right over my liver) from my teacher while sparring with him and I was done.

Being on the recieving end of a good slap will certainly remove any notions of its ineffectiveness in a fight.

yes i use slaps in training/fighting mine are also faster than my punches there actually my second fastest strike, my knife edge strike is my fastest i train on this alot my sparring partner says its my most effective strike. back to slaps though yeah there great for many reasons, the ones you mentioned are good points, but also for knocking center of balence off, and for confusion/distraction to conceal a more deadly strike/move, also as you mentioned a slap can end it all.
and no i havent heard that witht he sumos but i can see how its possible.

Tang Soo Do for those who dont know =
60% Soo Bahk
30% Northen Chinese
10% Southern Chinese
TSD is both a hard and soft style, derriving hardness from Soo Bahk, and soft flowing movements from Northen Chinese systems.
edit:I cant belive i bought into this ^lies, lies. TSD is shotokan with a Korean name and an emphasis on hip movement.
Originally posted by ddriveI've seen Bas Rutten use palm strikes while he was competing in Pancrase. It was crazy to see how many people were getting knocked around so viciously with his slaps. Even in his Pancrase match against Shamrock, he used nothing but slaps. I couldn't understand why.

me and my sparring partners go bare handed with no protective gear, we have slapped and palm smashed each other, and came up in red marks with dark blue/purple/black coloured spots inside and around the red mark, does this count as a rash? its not like bruising more reaction to chemical in skin type things, and we have smacked each others heads/temples/necks/stomachs and felt woosy/dizzy/unbalenced. howcomes you asked boarspear?
peace

Both the people have had experience with this and discussed it on other forums, I pmed them and asked them to share here as well...one of them told me he felt the general maturity level of this forum was not the place for this discussion, (see the two post above this one) the other hasnt answered me. I dont want to identify them, if they dont wanna talk about it on here I have to respect their decision

I do believe Danny Inasanto is well known for a fearsome slap, as are several other very well respected MA...so when you gonna let Danny know what you think of his slap?

Palm THIS!!
The palm is a splendid weapon! It was the first weapon I introduced to my daughters when I was beginning to teach them some fundamentals. The first technique was a trick to get some distance to use a cupped hand strike to destroy the small bones of the inner ear. A double strike to both ears and of course the "Tiger Claw" (chin jab) with the palm - to my favorite throw... Osoto gari! Nose strike, smash it baby! Palm from down under strike the JEWLES baby! Palm the knee while holding a foot, the elbow while holding the wrist? Man, I like it.
Palms are cool...
