Hackney did well on the Sumo guy. But lets not use that fight to espouse slaps. I mean, he didn't down the guy with one slap - he only downed him after loads and loads.....
Don't gte me wrong. I prefer open handed strikes also, but lets not get carried away. If the fist wasn't so vulnerable? I'd use that. But it is, so I don't.
I once entered a small inter club "Shoot Wrestling" competition when I was 32 (so young....). The only hands strikes were were allowed to do to the head were slapping type motions. I trained 'em like mad before the event.
My first opponent had no respect for them. He came at me with a low guard, and I knocked him down with a downward arcing slap that caught him in the face. The ref gave him an 8 count to clear his head. I then gave him a slap similiar to a left hook. This time he neeed an 80 count....... So they do work.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket though. My next opponent had seen that fight. His guard was wrapped tightly around his head, nullifying the slap. He then took me to the floor and proceeded to nearly rip my head off.......
