  • What TKD needs...

Just an editorial I guess... Let me know what you guys think. In my opinion, sporting is not the issue...

    1. No more bullshit dojangs with bullshit instructors and bullshit students <---- Absoutely the most important solution

    2. Less gear.

    3. Make WTF President/leader an actual Grandmaster who is well-known.

    4. More target areas allowed.

    5. The many bad U.S. dojos need to follow the ways of the many real-deal Korean dojangs.

Already, WTF has included punching in tournaments. I'm an optimistic kinda guy but i doubt drastic changes will be brought about soon (next couple years).

What are 2,3,4 suppose to accomplish?

      tournament play more interesting

Realistically, I think TKD is fine, get rid of a few McDojangs and we'll grow as an Art as a whole.

Oh yeah and we need a TKD star to rise in international fight tournaments to prove a thing or two.

Why in the crap would you want a WTF leader a Grandmaster? No offense to you bud but WTF is the most sporty style of TKD rather than martial style, I think a grandmaster from another school of TKD might make sense though.....Except there is a reason that TKD is splintered in the way that it is, because different students of TKD disagree about how it should be taught and how the style should evolve, so having a grandmaster from any particualr school of TKD seems like a backward step.

Otherwise most of what you said made sense.

What does TKD need? It's simple - a reality check.

Before you TKD folks go ballistic on me, hear me out. I've did TKD for over 6 years, competed in point sparring, then moved on to full-contact fighting. Very few elements of TKD helped me cross over to full-contact fighting, so I had to learn Muay Thai and boxing.

            TKD has issues including:

No head punches or lack of understanding of punching: Most TKDers don't understand the quickness and efficiency of punches. In fact, when TKD guys get too close, they're at a loss.

Too much emphasis on traditional techniques: knife hands, spear hands and Taeguek forms gotta go - they do nothing for the art.

On the bright side, TKD has helped me in the following ways:

Agility and Flexibility: You develop elasticity most people can only dream about. It also helps when you have speed. For instance, in my prime, I could kick faster than some people punching.

Conditioning: You get what you put into it.

Side Kicks: Gotta love the side kick. It's hard to avoid and hurts like a bi@tch!

I have to disagree. The forms have a place but should be the means and not the ends.

I disagree with some of the disadvantages there, one of them Medic06 has already pointed out. Spear hands, palm fists, knife hands etc. are all extremely effective if you know how to use them. Martial arts isn't just about competing, in a self defence situation they can be remarkably useful but due to the sporting side of MA they aren't practiced in sparring and therefore aren't used. Why do you think they are in basically any art out there?

Everyone is enetitled to his own opinion but I very much disagree with PStevens.

His post was no more than an implication that TKD sucks. I'd like to ask him why he thinks TKD sucks. Have you fought an ycompetent TKD artist, Stevens?

Were you in a McDojo? Anything could've traumatized your opinion .....

I can honestly say I have no idea what most of these people say about TKD. My school has a lot of hand elbow and knee techniques, I guess the ones other people goto are watered down kick clubs.

tkd_person89 i'd like to ask you that very same question, iv'e said this before and i'll say it again, i think the only reason you are CONSTANTLY creating these threads is because you doubt TKD yourself, if you doubt its capabilities then your basically saying it sucks aswell. Why do you feel the need to ask everybody what they think of TKD and why they think its not as good as it should be?

Interesting. You've never posted anything like this before. It's a whole new approach for you.

The thing is TKD he's right. Its the only thing you seem to post, why not, instead of making a new thread, continue it on one of the older threads
