Manson Gibson, a former professional kickboxer, won fights in Thailand using spinning backfists, spinning wheel kicks and spinning back kicks. These weren't the only techniques he used (his fundamental techniques were from muay thai). But he's kod and rocked alot of fighters with spinning attacks.

Some TKD guy named Yillmaz? recently fought Masato in a K-1 bout. He was able to hang with Masato and landed a few times with a hook kick and spinning back kick. However, he lacked low kick defense and was hobbling by the end of the bout from taking too many hard leg kicks.

A woman recently defended herself against two thiefs using TKD. You can find the post under the Women's counter offensive thread (I think).

People say that TKD has been watered down over the last 20 years because of its commercial influence, which explains its lack of quality. It can work, but it all boils down to the individual, the intensity he/she trains, whom they are fighting and the rules of the fight (K-1, MMA or street).

Amen to that, it's all variables but the stuff can work. I always believed it's about timing and the use of the nogin.

Yeah, literally. I read about "the Rock" Rocky Marciano. He would take a beating for 10 rounds and knock out his opponent in the 11th How's that for using the nogin.

Timing and nogin are good. That's why older more experienced fighters can beat younger more athletic ones. They fight smarter.

ummm, pretty sure "olympic style" WTF as your referring to is the style with less realism to it. i mean who really leaves their hands down and only kicks, sounds like only part of the equation to me

i think when u ppl writing your "thoughts" on tkd should specify if ur referring to itf or wtf,
and if you dont know the difference...keep your opinion to urself

              hmm...

for that story it was good... but becuz he lost the fight should not mean his TKD was not worth it maybe he was just trying to do soemthing the guy was ready for and also the guy could have had martial art training so i feel bad for the teacher

Hell I did my 4th degree last year and I barely passed..... it was very humbling, normally at all my previous rank tests I was the star of the test.... but my 4th was under Master Choi the head of my federation and he wasn't impressed.

                  Actually, in all honesty.....

Pardon my French, but belts don't mean a fucking thing. The ranking system most styles use today (Ryu/Dan, Gup/Dan, etc...) came into existence by Jigoro Kano who wanted a way to grade his judo students. Kano just wanted a way for his students to measure their progress and personal development, but everyone else liked the idea so much that soon everybody was using it. Belts are just an artificial system. So, in all honesty, belts don't mean anything at all.

I just wonder which guy he is. The one standing there with his mouth open, the one on the ground getting ready to be stomped, or one of the guys playing foosball. Foosball training is probably the most contact he's ever seen.

im with u maximus. watching the olympic i think gives tkd a bad wrap. maybe the rest of there training is good, but if u didnt know any better and watched the olympic u would think tkd teachs u to keep your hands down and just bounce around. yeah there kicks r fast but there isnt much behind them. if im going to throw a kick im gonna want to see the guy hurt. or i wouldnt kick. padding or no padding.

Belts not total waste of time

Kito you cant tell me you think all grading systems are a waste of time, in some instances i agree with you the belts dont mean that much but obviously adults who have black belts or higher are going to be able to take down a white belt of the same disipline.
