A woman recently defended herself against two thiefs using TKD. You can find the post under the Women's counter offensive thread (I think).
People say that TKD has been watered down over the last 20 years because of its commercial influence, which explains its lack of quality. It can work, but it all boils down to the individual, the intensity he/she trains, whom they are fighting and the rules of the fight (K-1, MMA or street).
