When he loses attention for just that moment then you are able to have a way to escape.

Dont just ignore the fact that it could possibly happen and possibly work. All though its best to work at it and get a better position then to just go and grab the groin. Also if the attacker is a woman it would not work as effectively but might make her uncomfortable enough.
I see your point to say that you could block then maybe grab the groin to get a better position but he has already stated he doesn't know ground fighting so he wouldn't know how to get to a better position. Even if he managed to get to a better position he might not know it and then you just pissed off the guy and he will be hitting that much harder.

I watched my brother strip a knife from a mugger and then lay him out with one hook. Sorry no video; we don't carry video cameras in case we happen to meet some dumbass who wants to roll us.

Now mind the guy had the stupedist grip on a knife possible without reversing the blade and only tried anything because my bro was walking with a serious limp at the time and I am fat enough still that people tend not to think "fighter" until they take a good look at my hands. Of course I also didn't have to raise a finger.

The women will need to know that she has options in the guard. Without going into too much depth, there are many offensive, defensive, and other tactics that can be employed in the guard position.
In a good rape prevention program this training has this incorperated.
