Anyone get the feeling that you are the "odd man out" with traditional styles?
To me, there is no such thing as I cheap move if it works!
I love Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and train it religiously. However, it is just something I do to develop the attributes necessary for REAL fighting. That being said, I will use ANYTHING that accomplishes the same thing, as long as it works in NHB!
I don't care from what art it came--it MUST however be able to be trained against an uncooperative partner, full contact (or reasonably close). I want my training to resemble, as closely as possible, a REAL fight!
This is the main problem I have with traditional stylists. Often times their training methods aren't realistic even though the technique their using MIGHT be. The problem they run into is they STOP SHORT of the target (because, after all, they don't want to hurt anyone). What they don't realize is that by consist practice of this, they are HARD WIRING the technique in question to work the same way.
Needless to say, training in this manner isn't very "ALIVE".
Alan, I'm not with the Straight Blast Gym although I've trained under the same concepts for the past 5 years (when I started doing BJJ and muay Thai). If I lived in Oregon (or close by), I'd be LIVING at THAT gym! Those guys rule!
I think anyone who trains in "core" combat arts (by that I mean combat SPORTS) eventually learns the same things.
Before I was doing BJJ, I'd been involved in Jun Fan/ JKD for a few years. I THOUGHT what we were doing was realistic. That is until I saw the UFC.
There is a reason why you never see a pak sao/lop sao in the UFC--it doesn't work. I don't want to waste my precious time training technique that could only be used in a VERY limited number of circumstances! There's just no point in it.
I live in Winston-Salem, NC. I train at a place called the Martial "Science" Academy (MSA). If you're in the area, you're welcome to come and train with us. That invitation is open to anyone.
