Hughes was really good at passing guard and gaining dominant position on the ground, and really... that's a BJJ thing... so like Royce said... the manner of loss was a compliment to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. As history has shown time and again, the students have once again become the masters, and the art (or science) is better for it.

I still want to see hughes fight newton again.
It's a BJJ thing, but done by a wrestler. His base is wrestling. I saw his ground dominance as a wrestling thing, not really a GJJ thing. Wrestlers find that the transition to no-gi BJJ, or sub wrestling isn't that difficult, only learning the subs are the real challenge... when I learned side control... I didn't really learn it from scratch. In wrestling we called it a pin, and in BJJ they don't turn their back often to get out of side control so I've found maintaining it fairly simple. That's just one exapmple though, I'm sure there are many more but you get it.

Good post though. I definitly agree with the last statement.

      my two cents

For those that don't know...Hughes trains Jiu-jitsu (along with other disciplines) with Miletich, who is a black belt in BJJ and teaches it at his school.

...so its not like BJJ got beat. Hughes beat Gracie, cause Gracie ONLY trains BJJ.

I am very surprised that Gracie's arm got caught like that!!! That is white belt shit...but I guess Gracie hasn't been controlled from the side like that in a decade or two....

and the reason he was in side control...is cause HE TRIED TO THROW A PUNCH AND WIFFED BADLY...then Hughes was under the arm and brough him down....then his elbow pops....then Gracie gives up his back.

Maybe if Gracie doesn't try to throw punches...the fight goes differently. But Hughes is awesome.

Gracie changed his style for this fight. He should have fought his game and not tried to punches when he normally wouldn't ...but then he would have to figure out how to get Hughes to the ground.

Hughes(if not the best)is one of the best fighters in the world, pound for pound...so its not like Royce can't hang... He got beat by the best....and Royce definately fought like shit.

I think he is so disgusted with himself, that he will have to fight again...

I just wish the fight was longer...and Rickson should stay retired....even if he beats Sakuraba, what does that prove. He would have to beat him five times...

True, Royce has fought many fights in the past, but I think this one has the most hype and publicity generated. I do believe Royce "froze up" though...not only cause of what I heard, but it looked like Royce didn't do much. He hardly looked like he even tried to recover guard. Also, in this case, I don't think it's a matter of saving face. Everyone already accepts that Hughes did clearly dominate, including Royce and his camp. It's now just a matter of learning from what went wrong.
I guess we'll have to see. And in the mean time, we can agree to disagree.

No, actually he trains with wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing also. And he's not garbage at them either, granted not at Hughes level of any of these mentioned, but also let's remember, Hughes has been the champ for a while... and there's a reason. He's actually trained in all over these for over 10 years(he's never stopped fighting, just in the UFC).

Gracie almost nailed him. I actually wanted to post that and ask people what they thought would happen if the punch had caught. It was a big one.

lmao...even if Royce did land that punch it wouldnt have done anything. It was thrown from a close clinch and Hughes would have just answered with a bigger punch instead of taking Royce down. I dont know why you think that would have been a powerful punch. Oh, and BTW, as Hughes was taking him down, Royce attempted a side headlock, and then Hughes pretty much had his back when they hit the floor. Im actually suprised Hughes didnt have a back mount alot earlier in the fight.

No he wouldn't have... it was a big punch, and he was going for the takedown. The assumption is the punch lands... not Hughes changes his plan of attack. And it's not IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A POWERFUL PUNCH, it pretty much was. Did you see it? Close to the jaw too from what I saw. Don't even need a powerful punch to the jaw, a medium power punch will do. Royce didn't attempt a sidehead lock, he was trying a half assed hip throw becuase he had accidentally given his back up.

He didn't have his back earlier because Royce isn't a fish, he's a good grappler.

Maybe we need a "masters" class for 40 and over. Perhaps Judo Gene Lebell Vs Helio Gracie I'd get PPV for that one

Well, I asked, then Triangle Joke decided to make stupid comments like he usually does, then I had to refute him, which is where my post came from.

Anyway, Boar, I thought you and Jubaji were cool...
