Actually BJJ's roundhouse kick was derived from Capoeira and is quite functional.

And once again, as I've said before, there exists a time in history when Rickson, and Renzo, and all the Machado bros ALL taught at the Gracie academy side by side wearing Gracie gi's. Rorion just decided he wanted the art all to himself and actually tried to sue his cousins..crazy guy. Whats funny to me is that Rorion is advertising the Book "The Gracie Way" on his website, but this book shows the truth and has a number of different pictures of Rorion and Rickson and Rigan and Renzo all side by side united under the gracie flag. Crazy Drama!

According to the boom Mastering Jujitsu by Renzo Gracie "the roundhouse of jujitsu is derived from Thailands national art muay thai."

So they learned Muay Thai or something and put the stuff into BJJ?

BJJ is a combination of many different arts. It has changed a lot over the years. But the core strategy is always the same despite the techniques, to get the opponent in a grappling situation and then to get into a dominant position were you can attack him and he can not attack you.

The original reason for the name BJJ was due to Rorion trademarking the name "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" so no one else could use it. Before this there was no "BJJ" and when people started using the name BJJ there were no differences in technique from Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Just a different way to identify the fighting system without getting sued.

Helio promoted Gracie Jiu Jitsu as a way to fight, not a form as self defense. He would advertise in the news paper that he would fight anyone and people took him up on that offer.

Thanks. So that wasn't right ?

I saw on the IGGFK (If I spelled it right) Rorion talking about Helio is the grandmaster/founder of GJJ & some other stuff

Pedro Sauer was a student of Rickson's as well I believe, but all his schools are considered BJJ schools. Somehow I am pretty sure Rickson is pure Gracie lineage and his students get pretty top notch instruction.

                      Sad really...

It's all about the MONEY! Buy the hype!

When did it all cease to be about student and personal development and about the almighty dollar?

When's it going to end and how far is it going to go? Are we going to have UFC only certified MMA schools whose fighters can only compete in UFC? Are we going to have the Japanese trademark the words "karate" and "judo" for example and foreign schools have to pay the Japanese government to be able to use them?

In the late 60's. What little integrity that remained in the billboard schools was utterly destroyed by the flood of MMA wannabee schools that popped up everywhere.

If you're not a babysitting service, or you you don't cater to yuppies who are NOT interested in SD you're in deep shit.

                            I see. I wasn't born then.

But I'm glad we have a time period worked out.....going by NZ's place in time, it's probably the late 60's over here now.

The sad fact is there are very few people willing to put in the time and effort to actually learn a real TMA.

This leads to clowns who claim to be black belts who wouldn't pass a yellow belt test in a real school...but they've been promoted anyway so the dojo owner could pay the rent.

Soon no one respects the TMA's...then the door is open for any clown with a marketing gimmick, the rest is all downhill sad to say.

And then said clowns start an internet forum dedicated to bashing people who practice real TMA's.

(Not this site BTW). Granted they do find some real losers every now and then.
