Tony:
I'm saying, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.
That's what gets everyone into trouble.
I would rather live with a simpleton like Bush for a paltry four years, than to start tinkering with the gears of our system of democracy just because Gore won the popular vote by several hundredths of a percentage point.
The Founders weren't perfect, but I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the bath-water just yet. Our system works.

To his credit, Nader is an intelligent idealistic man. But he really shouldn't have messed up this election. He grabbed 96,000 votes in the state of Florida of which most would have gone to Gore if he'd stayed out of the election. And after all this, did he get his 5%? HELL NO.
I would love to see the bipartisan nature of the US's politics disappear, but it won't, it's almost necessary for intelligent open minded people to unite to keep the army of a few billionares and millions and millions of Christians at bay.
Well, I won't dismiss the whole thing quite yet, it's not over until the fat lady sings.

Miyagi: it sure does look like Nader may have cost Gore Floria, you're right. However, Nader didn't get into the race to elect Gore and--being equally critical of both parties--there should have been no expectation that he lay down at the last minute and say "Okay, let's get behind him because he's not Bush." In his view, they're both bad choices for very similar reasons, so he was of no mind to "go with the lesser evil."
Yeah, he didn't get his 5% but that doesn't change the fact that he's right on in just about everything he says. It's America's loss, and I'll tell you what: had Nader been allowed into the debates, he would have clinched that 5% and then some. He wasn't. He wasn't because both Dems AND GOPs ("Republicrats" as NHB refers to them) knew he would make an ass out of them. Particularly Dubya. And siphon off even more votes than he did. Don't forget, Perot stole a lot of Bush votes, so the 3rd party thing isn't necessarily a lefty thing.
EJ: your guns will be safe under Dubya. In fact, since they will almost certainly become universally legal without any sort of restraints, I will be soliciting you guys (John!) for purchasing tips when I get mine. I'm leaning towards a Glock 9, but I'm a little green.
God help you, though, should you be caught with some ganja under Dubya's administration. We know that evil weed is immoral and for your failure to Just Say No, you'll be doing time with the other 60% of our prison population's non-violent drug offenders. So that some suburban GOP schmuck representative can tell his constituents that he's taking a bite out of crime.
Ronin: what, we can never have a constitutional amendment? If it ain't broke, yes: don't fix it. A lot of people, though, think the electoral college idea is broke. Me included.

Here's my take on it.
If Gore is elected, great. I voted for him and wanted him to win.
If Bush is elected, I'm going to use my newly protected second amendment rights to buy an assault rifle, go find Ralph Nader and mount his head on my wall. Then I'm going to find every single Liberal Dem if FL, OR, et al. and wound them for thinking their vote wouldn't count, and that the Green's were a real challenger.
Just because you're in a Rage Against the Machine video does not mean you should be president or that you should cost someone else the presidency.

I can’t remember if it was CNN or MSNBC, but one of them had done an exit pole in Florida and asked Nader voters who they would have voted for if Nader was not in the race. Surprisingly, only around 50% of them said they would have voted for Gore. Presumably the other 50% would have gone to the Bushman.

Oh you wanted logical reasoning.
Here's why I voted Gore instead of Nader.
There are a number of issues that I agree with Nader on. I do believe we need a public health care system. I do believe that the two biggest parties are corrupt. I do believe in the abolishment of the death penalty. I do, within reason, believe that its a woman's right to choose (That late term abortion thing is still wrong, but that's another thread.) However, I still do believe there are fundamental differences in Bush and Gore.
Gore is a moderate, but he also is far more to the left than his rival Bush. He does not advocate a return to Supply side economics. He does not want to use faith based programs in our schools. He favors gun control. He favors a woman's right to choose. He can actually name the heads of other countries, and though he lies, he doesn't stick his foot in he mouth so much he has to pick his toenail clippings out of his teeth.
Bush on the other hand takes a much more right wing approach to all these issues. Also do you think that with his "small government" policies he'll won't need to cut, and snip at other programs? Or do you think that his "small government" policies will extend to moral, and pharmeceutical issues? And he now has the support of a Republican Congress to go along with his policies.
Thank Nader if any of these things are important to you and they change under the new administration.

Tony10, I'm not saying that the 3rd party is a purely liberal idea. But let's face it, Perot snagged votes from George sr. because he, like George sr., was also a rich conservative Texan.
Nader is a definite liberal and there were 96,000 people in Florida who gave him the nod.
I agree with you that Nader should have been allowed in the debates. He would have made a bigger ass out of Bush than Gore.
I'm furious about the motions filed by the Republicans to close the polls on schedule in Missiouri (St. Louis to be exact) before everyone had a chance to vote. They deliberately made an attempt to block democracy from functioning.
