what up saki?
Anyway before you assume this an "i hate christains rant". whatever you think gives you the strength to go on is good in my opinion. You can believe that elvis is your own personal saviour and pray to him 6 hours a day if you want...but dont expect me to buy all his albums. when the shit hits the fan i would prefer six armed athiest to the rescue, than the prayers of a million practioners of any religion for their god to save me. If caught in a life or death situation with seconds to decide the outcome, i want the guy who spends those seconds assessing and preparing to fight, not the guy who spends them in prayer to back me up. I found in my experience many people who believe in god or his protection fail to do things to insure their own survival. People get a little arrogant in assuming that of all the people in the world "he has my back."
Ask any combat medic how many guys he has seen die because they got "permission" from a priest in last rites? People who wouldnt and SHOULDNT have died from the wounds they recieved but their will to live was superseded by their will to "go home" to god.
As long as your beliefs TRULY make you stronger...go for it.

Okay first of all I'm not a Christian at all (though I do thing Jesus is really cool). I get your analogy, obviously people need to take actions, assess and prepare to fight, etc. when in situations where there are only seconds to decide the outcome. But not EVERY situation is one where there are only seconds to decide the outcome. So what do you do in those in-between moments?
Also while I see what you're saying about people getting arrogant thinking that God will back them up, there are a lot of atheists who think "It can't happen to me!" and are arrogant for other reasons. There are also a lot of things people could be distracting themselves with OTHER than prayer during the few critical seconds they need to be taking action. Just try meditating and you can come up with numerous other examples of potential distractions in war zones. So I would say that I would prefer six armed and focused people with the will to live, whether that is because of their love of Elvis, their God or their country, who ARE doing things to insure their own survival. I believe what you said about people dying because they got "permission" but I don't think you need to be religious to lose your will to live. I guess it can go either way, huh? What has kept me going in my darkest moments is this idea that maybe I'm on earth for a reason and can help other people if I just shed enough ego to let God do it through me. Also since I DO believe in God I absolutely think that if I get in a situation where I even think I MAY need to use self-defense, I wouldn't be in that situation unless I left an opening. And because I want to live to accomplish whatever it is I'm supposed to do, I'm gonna do everything I can not to leave any openings. I'm not leaving doors unlocked or any of that. "Faith without works is dead."
