    Damian,

The ATA is a very unique orginization. They crosstrain alot. They even reccommend that you crosstrain only thing they are sort of a greedy organization and they offer certifications in other styles so you don't take your money else where to crosstrain. Any black belt can be certified in a number of weapons, techniques and styles that are not pure tkd. The ATA really wants to have someone qualify for the olympics. As a whole they don't practice olympic sparring but just like other certifications instructors can be certified in olympic sparring and teach it. The ATA has there hopes on having an olympic competitor come from the ata. As far as I know they haven't so far. The ATA is a very organized association though and I am sure they will produce an olympic champion eventually. We are the largest martial arts organization around right now. But we have alot of kids and soccer moms involved so it is sort of watered down at a lot of schools. I am lucky to have a good instructor who seperates different people who have different expectations from the martial arts.

      Forgot something

As far as olympic style sparring in the ATA I dont know about shielding. ExcessiveForce has been associated with it for a longer time he could probably give you more in depth information on the rules of ATA.

You are majorly generalising by saying you've felt those kicks and they have no power... you never felt my kicks or the majority of the worlds kicks so to say they all lack power is a huge stretch don't you think? Ah well, maybe if I get a chance to go to Chang Mai sometime we can meet up.

There's plenty of good boxers in Thailand, there's also plenty of crappy ones. A foreign friend of mine was a big champ here because he dominated with boxing and knocked everyone out, his opponents (high level ones too) obviously couldn't out box him.

What are you doing for New Years?

I am still here, Khaosan, where are you? I am leaving today at 10 pm, was meant to be earlier bu met up with a few fellas and got drunk. New year was ok.... nothing special.

Dude if you are heading to Chiang Mai I can help get you cheap lessons from my teacher.

lol, I prefer the smashing effect of the Thai roundhouse, to me its more like I want to kick.

Thai fighters at their peak are fucking good! belive me mate, I dont mean that as a biased remark its just something that happens when you start training as soon as you can walk. But any man when training hard enough can be just as good but the majority dont train in such a way, its a life for most of these people.

There are a small percentage of Muay Thai fighters that leave a mark in the official rankings of Thailand, Ramon Dekker and Rab Kamon are amongst them.

The standard of Thaiboxing here is not an exaggerated thing, when they say its high it really does mean its a high standard, you hold a title here for longer than 6 months, mate you're like a living legend!! haha.

          well gotta shoot.

Yep it's true, my instructor was taught by them & they were mixing tkd into thaiboxing then.

              Happy New Year all!

              S. Anucha,

I believe William managed to reply before I even had a chance! Thai Boxing in its pure form does not rely on the fists as well as its other weapons does it? Like William stated, they have incorporated more western boxing methods into their regimine. I would never say they are 'bad' boxers, no way. In the gym I stayed at, Sasiprapa, Bangkok, they would spar western boxing now and then.

I would say that almost all of the fights where I have seen a Thai lose to a foreign fighter was through the boxing. The Thais can out kick and out knee their opponents, but worthy fighters have been able to weather this and win with the hands. I am not saying they are bad, just that they do not favour these weapons as much. Especially not as much as a foreigner who knows he will probably lose if he tries to play the kicking/kneeing game.

As for the flashy kicks, yes 95% percent of them lack power and are not very applicable in the ring against Thai power. But there are a few good ones. Like the turning back kick. I have been on the receiving end of these and one knocked the wind out of me so bad I had to stop.

Check out kiatsongrit, it can happen to the best

Manson Gibson beat him with the same move I believe.

Oh for crying out loud.... you need to check your internet more often! haha It's 11pm and you just left an hour ago I guess.... I did nothing all day but train a bit, I had alot of free time I coulda met up with you. Ah well, tell us all how its going in ChangMai S. Anucha.

I went to CM2 until 6 am on New Years Eve, they had a good band and in another room that actually played good music, not nonstop bad techno like usual. I think I broke some prostitutes heart that I was dancing with... she must have thought I was going to take her home.. sheesh I just like to dance!

Ok, so I am here now.... I changed my mind about travelling by bus when I remembered the last time I could smell the shit from the toilet as for some reason the air-con was linked to the toilet! Anyway I took the train, got pissed as is the usual travelling thing to do, arrived safe and sound at 12:00 am and caught the cold, was great, I felt like shit and slept for nearlly 20 hours.

Today aint too bad, I feel a lot better and met up with my teacher. The place where we are all training has changed address.... a lot of reasons I wont go into, but the technique remains the same which in my opinion is important. I met a few new teachers and one actual Kru of Muay Boran! He is teaching at our place... Damien you said about how you like to learn technique rather than spend time training for fitness, thats the way its done at ours. Lanna Muay thai concentrate on phyisical fitness and to be honest is not the place I'd want to train.

Anyway, ask any Muay Thai teacher do they know our camp name they will more than likely know it it is one of the best Thai fighting styles in Thailand.... thats something for you to think about. Pronounce it like this, S.Anucha = Saw Aa-noo-chaa <--- the chaa being a high tone, they have had many champions of both stadiums and teach Muay Boran techniques in their Thai style, they concentrate on Grappling and knees, elbows and kicking more than boxing. You will learn a lot from the teachers as they are very persistant and dedicated, they will assess your level and take you from that level whatever it may be.

Hope to see you sometime, I am here till May.

By the way, Chiang Mai as usual is a shit hole but at least its a relatively cool shit hole at night

I know Sor Anucha, they had a fighter fight before me, on my card. His name was Veera-yut (I remember cause I still have the flyer). Where exactly is the camp located? and does it have an English name? I thought I had visited all the camps around the area, but don't recall it.

Cool as in cold or cool as in WOOHOO! haha It is cool season so maybe you meant cold.

Hey Kru Dave, let me know when someone from the academy is coming down. It would be my pleasure to help them out or show them around a bit.

                        Hey Damian,

Happy New Year! I wish I could tell you in person. I can't believe that it was one year ago already... I remember New Years eve, sick in bed at a guest house in Kanchanaburi, sigh.

I wish I could tell you that it was me coming down, but alas, not for a bit yet. I'm trying to get things nailed down here, but wouldn't mind a few more fights in Thailand. We'll see. As for any students, it's tough to say. A few people from the club were over there, but are back now (nobody you'd know). Are you still in Bangkok?

Chiang mai is a bit of a dirt hole, but cleanish air to say the least. But I do prefer Chiang Mai than Bangkok, I also do love Thailand.

Yut, he is in prison now.. lol, he was number uno in Chiang Mai just before locked up.

S.Anucha. great technique, really bloody powerful.

Damien, Chiang Mai is cool, not too hot and not too cold, just nice

I guess it makes sense that ChangMai is cooler since it's North!

Damien, I met a guy who was training in lamai Muay Thai for 2 months or something, he's 35 years old, Spanish and named Alberto, nice fella. He was very impressed with the instruction the S.Anucha boys gave gave him. dude he also filled me in on the regime down there, hmm... I dont know what to think but it sounds the same as Lanna Muay Thai.

There are boxing trainers everywhere in Thailand, camps, places where they train, some trainers have money some dont, some camps are make shift some are a full professional complex, no matter where you train the important thing is the guy who is training/teaching you. Lanna Muay Thai has the bread and butter, I mean this camp is a nice camp, full of equipment and lots of pads, 2 rings, therapists etc... damn it has everything! the place I train at is make shift, has 2 bags, one ring, the equipment needs renewed.... it aint got the cash behind it but when the fighters fight they fight under the name S.Anucha, you mention that name to any Thaiboxing lover in Thailand and you'll hear a very positive response.... why?

You definately have to pop up to Chiang Mai, you definately have to let me know when you are here, i know what you look like so I can find you or meet you. You definately have to learn a little more from our dear old peasent teachers trust me you wont be disapointed, surprised of the lack of equipment and dirty faces but as soon as you start being taught the lack of equipment and clean faces will be irrelevant.... 16th Jan is fight night for one of them and I wont be far behind him.
